I just realized something....the AMC Eagle predates Subaru's AWD system.

And also, I had a crazy idea of retooling the Jeep Compass to become...the Jeep Eagle It would be AWESOME...they could even make an RT version!

Pre 73 oil crisis? Dodge ______ cause my dad can still recall the exact location of everything under the hood. He worked on them extensively in high school and afterwards, but wound up with cooking as a career because he got fucked over by a mechanic who said he would take him on as an apprenticeship but instead used him for cheap labor before showing him the door (still bitter?)

Post oil crisis? Datsun 240z, 260z, 280z.

back when I was in high school, my father pulled a 472 or a 500 out of a 72 or 73 Sedan De Ville and stuffed it in an 85 or 86 Chevy 2wd, short-wheelbase, shortbox pickup.
it was scary to drive.

It depresses me that even in what many think of as the dark days of Detroit, I would buy that 79 Pinto new long before a Focus. It just seems there was an innocence with the imagination they had. Would a Pacer be green lighted today? Hell no (tho, maybe that was what the Aztec was suppose to be? )

everyone laughs at a Pinto, but I had two of those cars. MY 1980 Pinto was one rugged, pissed off angry little car. The engine would rev until the throwout bearing threatened to quit and blow out the side of the bellhousing. The car would handle on tires that would make a rally driver cry for mama. Got 35mpg out of a TWO-BARREL CARBURETOR! (fuck fuel injection! as used to say). Was it homely? Well, yes.

But it's other attributes made up for it.
