Have you seen the making-of documentary Hearts of Darkness? Fascinating. It's a wonder Coppola and Sheen (and many of the others) survived making the movie.

Sheen had a heart attack, yes. Coppola went completely bonkers, true.

I understand that completely (the going bonkers part)

Read 'The Conversation,' by Michael Ondaatje. It's a (you guessed it) conversation between him and Walter Murch, the man who edited A N, The Conversation, The Godfather, etc. You want to get into the real heart of filmmaking, read this book. It's edifying.

"Heart of Darkness" by Josef Conrad, upon which Apoc. Now is loosely based, is one hell of a good read. Instead of an renegade Colonel you have an Ivory hunter who goes wackadoodle way up the congo, (now there's a phrase). Sends back tons of Ivory though. Read it if you get a chance.

I have the Classics Illustrated comic book adaptation.

The other big crazy thing in AN is that the scene in the hotel room at the beginning was real. Sheen was drunk at like 8 a.m. and punched his mirror after doing karate moves and cut his hand all to hell. They kept filming until he passed out from blood loss. The whole thing was just crazy from day one. Coppola said "This movie isn't about Vietnam, it IS Vietnam."

I think AN is a disrespectful portrayal of the veterans. And Brando's overlong speech about "the horror" is a bore. AN, despite a few good scenes, sucks.

I found it to be well made. A lot of talent was displayed, including Harrison Ford's first appearance in a MMP etc. Not saying it was realistic, although Clean's dying as his tape from home plays his Mom's voice was not very far from the reality and suddenness of events, just very entertaining.

I was there, did it, got the t-shirt. Every time I think about a scene in the movie that was "disrespectful" I laugh my ass off. It's a movie, man.

Star Wars was in between too. 1977

HF's scenes were filmed before Star Wars, IIRC.

Didn't they start filming it in like 1974?

I think even earlier than that. IIRC, the war was still going on when they started. I should watch Hearts of Darkness again.

Probably was earlier. I never can remember. I'll have to look up the movie you're talking about.

Oh, and just to throw this out there...one of my favorite sketches.

Yesterday I sat down and watched the documentary, certainly an eye opener.

I've got the Redux version of the movie, with all the deleted scenes and extra stuff and the documentary really explained a lot of what you see in it.

Only killer is it's over 3 hours long and you really have to take it in small doses, since it doesn't flow as well as the theatrical release.

Some people think that Apocalypse Now is a work of art....
Others would rather watch Death Race on regular bases....
Whatever makes you happy...
