I like old Hondas. The unloved ones. Pre-1990 Accords and pre-1992 Preludes. I moderate on a third gen Accord forum, as a matter of fact.

I get so much shit for liking those old Hondas from guys that have just slightly newer Honda Civics. I guess I'm just a sucker for late 70's and 80's Honda engineering.

1992 Honda Accord... one of the most indestructible cars I have ever seen.
some of my friends demo-derby'd one a few years back (the floorpan was pretty rotten). Bryan held the throttle to the firewall and just kept going first to reverse... the engine, clutch or transmission refused to break. My other friend Victor had a 93 Accord sedan that had 320,000 miles on it when he traded it for a 92 Chevy Lumina Euro 3.1 coupe. It was in Rutland VT for a couple of years... it must've had 400,000 miles on it by the time it was retired.

That's typical of those old Hondas. I swear the Accords were built out of a solid chunk of steel. After cutting one up for scrap, I can see why they can withstand such a beating.

my aunt had a 81 accord so rotten, there was angle iron and threaded rod holding the front suspension in, the shock towers were rotten through. the hood was structural due to rust. it had a cool backward opening hood and "power" rear door locks, controlled by a lever on the center console, you pulled it and cables connected to the back doors unlocked them

I had an '81 accord field car. 4 years after abandoning it in a ravine, half submerged in swamp water because the struts came thru the hood, it started when I put a battery in it.

And ran well.

As are most other import cars. They've all grown. Corollas, Jettas, Sentras... all way bigger than 10 years ago. I think Civics are even considered mid-size now.

Still durable though... just ticked over 100k on mine with not a single problem to date. Just oil, filters, one set of brakes, and tires a couple times. I'm shooting for 400k. Granted 100k isn't too many miles these days, but I have yet to own a car that didn't give me even just a tiny bit of grief before 100k.

I'm getting a '91 with almost 300k on the clock. Not sure why I need it, but I can't stand to see it junked. It's been in my family since it was new. Still runs great.
