My '87 ran great. Just had to replace the transmission and keep a healthy supply of fuel pump fuses on hand. I'll admit that it was at least easy enough to push backwards though when it lost reverse.

Never burned oil, even at 190k though.

that was my friends' 98 Jetta... it went through three manual transmissions before he finally sold it.
i was never sure if it was something he was doing or the transmissions themselves.

Nah, I think the transmissions just stunk. My brother had a '98 Jetta also... that lost reverse too.

Let me guess the VW's getting turbo charged!!!

Nay, I'd rather get phenomenal gas mileage over Speed.
Maybe in time drop a VR6 in it.

But I wanna get the Euro grill,Round headlight,Euro Bumpers. Lower it a few inches. and get some decent looking rims.

With my luck, Since this is my first car that is stick, And I havent driven stick in a few years...I'm gunna burn out the clutch.

Dropping a VR6 in that is going to be phenomenally hard. It would fun though. Those be damn spiffy engines

Also I'd be careful with round headlights, but it could look cool

Why is dropping a VR6 into it hard? A pre OBD-II VR6 is basically a drop in. I put on in an '87 GTI in a weekend. The biggest deal is the wiring, but as long as you have the whole harness, it's not too bad.

And I'm curious about the round headlight thing, too... why be careful? It's also a bolt in mod that takes like an hour to do properly.

Vitali one of the mechanics at a local speed shop here can have a R32 engine into an MK2 in under 9 hours.

the VR6 was a ball to drive in my friends 98 Golf GTi, but it seemed like when everything broke, it broke all at once and was retardedly expensive to fix.
the car would hustle, though.
he used to say that GTI stood for "Goodbye To Integras!"

i remember he got into a deathmatch with a supercharged Corrado on VT 22A one night... the Corrado couldn't pull away, but we couldn't get around him and this was at about 140mph! Someone told me that generation of Golf had the aerodynamics of a brick!

I was under the impression that VR6's had very different mounts, and that all that would have to be custom-built. I could be mistaken. Either way, I guess if you have the money, you can find a shop that will do it. I'm on a budget so engine swaps are out of the question and everything I do to modify my engine pretty much has to be bolt-on

And RE: the round headlights, I just don't think it would look good on that Jetta. I'd go with wider Euro lights if anything. Just my opinion tho. I thought about round headlights for mine and decided to leave it as is and throw on some fog lamps eventually.

So the car has been issue free so far, Except for some blown fuses..

I have a question tho..
My radio,Dome light,Cigarette lighter and clock went out. Now I'm buying fuses.
They are 20amp fuses. I was wondering if I could use 25amp? Or would that start a fire?

25-30 will be fine. If there's a dead short, it'll still blow the fuse. Just as long as there IS a fuse. Back when your car was made, accessories that plugged into the lighter didn't draw as much as stuff nowadays.

NOW- replacing a 5 amp fuse with a 30? That's a no-no. But for something like that, you're not going to start any fires or wreck anything.
