Anybody else get in on the preorder for the 27th?

Over the weekend, Blizzard had the Battlenet beta and it looks very promising. Extremely promising. I'm not all that fond of Battlenet, but the game looks cool so far.

My computer just barely fits the minimum requirements, I think I'll buy this game very soon. I'm a fan of custom matches, so if this has anything like tower wars or what not i'll be buying it.

I sucked at SC but hopefully I can be better at this one, I'll play the campaign first.

I believe you can do the custom maps, the editor was enabled during the Battlenet beta because they wanted people to play with it and make them.

There seems like there's a lot of new stuff, which I like. As long as Gamestop doesn't screw up my order like the last time.

I honestly don't get it. SC and WCII were awesome at the time because that's what we had to play. But now they're considered "90's games". What I don't understand is how SC2 is going to be so great and awesome. Maybe it will be great and awesome, but I don't see it living up to this constant hype that it's been getting this week. Is it still now moving around little space soldiers and building buildings faster than the other guy?

Where I'm going with this is that SC1 was a great realtime strategy game. What about a new one with updated graphics and models makes it any better than the first one? What makes it worth buying?

And it's not that it's a new game, I totally get the people want to play the new game out and many people flock to each new game as they come out. It's more of the "OMG OMG STARCRAFT II OMG" fanboyism amongst the gamer community which is equivalent to the 14 y.o. girls creaming over the dude from Twilight. That's what I don't get about it. I don't get the OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG SC2, when in reality it's just.....SC2.

And I have played a beta of it. ....it's Sc2....

The reason I like the games has nothing to do with the play, I'm a story hound. I love story in my game and that's a big seller for me. It's got nothing to do with an updated anything that makes me want to buy it, it's that this continues the story.

It's the reason I stayed with WoW through two expansions. It's all about the story man. I would have stayed for Cataclysm too, but Star Trek Online showed up and I'm all about Star Trek...my best gaming days were back when online games were MUD's and role playing text based servers. STO brings back 2d combat, which was a big seller for me, visual 2d combat was something that Cornwell and others on one of the Star Trek text games were trying to bring into the game. They nearly succeeded before interest in the game waned.

I'm not sure if there is LAN play, I know you can play with whoever you want through battlenet.

Oh, one big thing...

If you're gonna play, update Direct X and your video drivers, or else you'll end up being unable to see the cinematics between missions and other stuff. In my case, it fixed the screen tear and black mess I had.

I believe they got rid of lan play for this one... which is too bad because lan play was one of the features that made starcraft 1 so good/important...

Why thank you, I take that as a compliment.

STO plays a lot like the text based games I used to play. That's why I started it. I was a ship's captain on one of the text based games I played on. You actually had to roleplay, as in write your character bio, live, talk and work like your character in the game. Based on your play, you were promoted or demoted up through the ranks from Crewman/Academy Cadet to Admiral.

Basically, you were writing a story based on your character's point of view. That's what I loved about it, it was all in the first person.

Ship combat was all numbers, no visuals, based on the tabletop rpg's of the past. You got readouts and had to react based on those. I was a pilot, one of the better ones, which was why I ended up being a captain. Usually I could get my ships home in one piece.

You could end up being an admiral and be the lousiest flyer in the fleet, all that mattered was that you played the game and how you played your character based on the lore and canon. That's a big reason why the visuals, gameplay and other stuff don't matter to me much, it's the story that's along the way that makes the game for me. Sure, that stuff is nice, but it's not the game, at least not to me. It's one reason I miss those games, imagination is a million times better than what Blizzard or any of the other game companies could come up with and the text based games gave you the room and opportunity to imagine and create along with what the developers and admins gave you.

Totally different outlook than me then. I'm all there for the competition and killing newbs. I did enjoy God of War's story though.

I'm with Shael on this. Story is super important in a video game. I mean I don't get a huge bonar for most story lines extended over the course of several games, but there are some. I always pay very close attention to the story in whatever game I'm playing though, and a well composed/thought out story really makes a game so much better for me

That being said I'm not buying SC2 :p

..yet

maybe eventually. Ridiculous it took them this long to release it though.
