cheap but good ... (?)

Why don't we start an under $50 thread on lights?

I recently came across this in Lowe's while stocking up on batteries, and its 180lumens seemed somewhat appealing with a long run time unlike some of the $20 led lights I've bought (and lost) on DX that run for 1-2 hours at this light setting.

It's not the best looking thing (it could be made of metal) but it was $24

You can still get a lot of lights that are awesome for under $50. I'd say go under $30 for this thread.

I've used the aluminum version of that Dorcy light. Pretty good for the price. Wal-mart carries it for a similar price to the plastic version.

My favorite cheap light has got to be a Mag-Lite. Around here, these are $3 yard sale fodder. I got my current one for free. It had a battery corroded in it that I had to push though the tube. Took it apart, cleaned it all out and it worked okay. Replaced the bulb with a Mag-num (xenon) bulb and did a resistance mod and it's honestly pretty good. So far, my total cost (not counting batteries) is less than $5.

I don't think you're going to get good quality at $30 for 200+ lumens.

I don't think you'll find that a higher stated lumen output makes a better light.

no definitely not, but I was meaning +/- 40 lumens anyhow. I'd like something to last for more then 1 hr when I go out and not cost too much (in case I misplace it )

I really like my Fenix E20. $35 at DX. 109 lumens, one mode, really simple.

Unless you are using it for photography and you want to shoot at a certain aperture and iso combination then brighter usually is better.

With that said for light painting I really like the x2000, it has a wide even beam when zoomed out and a narrow square beam when zoomed in. It's great for painting large areas as well as if you have something very small to illuminate. Best part is, it only costs $11.62. http://www.dealext...tails.dx/sku.14450

A side note the last one I ordered came with 3 different modes which I found very odd since it used to have only one mode. It has hi, med, and strobe I like the med mode but the strobe I could really do without.

Ya, I got it as a replacement for one that had a broken tailcap clicky so I could potentially just swap tailcaps and then have a working one with just one mode.

Lots of great lights under $50, plenty under $30. You might even find a few decent ones with around 200 lumens if you really care about that. Some of the Romisens I think might get up there.

Those push-pull focus lights are pretty neat, velcro has two of them. Not sure which ones he has but they work pretty well although I loath their battery configuration (I think it's 3xAAA in a cheap battery carrier).

I've come across this one before...how is it on batteries? Does it crap out after an hour or so?
