| | | Posted by vince So I bought a elantra, it works fine, except the gas mileage is weird.I made an experiment : I waited until my fuel light lit up.I put about 35 liters of gas.Wait for the light to lit up again. With the 35 liters, I made 258 kilometers/160 miles.I know the fuel gauge are generally not accurate, but it still weird.I checked the tire pressure,I change the air filter,it's a 2006 with 23 300 miles,so except than that I can't see what can be wrong. That was mostly town driving, but I tried to be easy on the acceleration. Is it normal for that kind of car ? What should I check ?
| a car with 23k on it should not need anything other than maybe a fuel or ail filter. your number are about right for that car in around town driving. you can look up the original, well our EPA, estimate for that car. Most of the big numbers are for highway-long trip travel. My Cobalt SS is only rated for 19-22 around town, 32 highway.

| | | Posted by vince I got rid of my buick century because it had a whole lot of problem which made the car burn about 18 liters of gas / 100 kilometers, and I was expecting much better with an elantra.I checked the spark plugs, they are not rusted but I will have someone look a it.When we talk about '' wires '' what are those exactly ? Is it possible that the sensor or something that determine the amount of gas left is defective ?
| i'm telling you, the mileage is about right for that car. spark plugs on 99% of most new cars are designed to go 100,000 miles, and some even last longer than that. The wires on my 96 Chevrolet Beretta are the factory wires that came on that car in 1996... 15 years and 101,000 miles, still firing. Now, if you're going to go nose first into the anatomy of your engine bay, the wires are the wires that run from your coil packs/ignition module to the spark plugs in the cylinder head(s). Some cars still have them, some don't... my Cobalt SS doesn't have wires. It has boots from the ignition module between the camshaft housings that direct fire to the plugs. Your car, i'm not sure, but i am leaning towards it having wires. Again, at 23,000 miles, i doubt highly this car needs anything other than maybe a fuel and air filter change. Besides, you can't really tell anything from a spark plug without pulling it out of the head and checking the condition of the electrode and gap. http://fueleconomy...frames/21965.shtml Fuel Type Regular MPG (city) 23 MPG (highway) 31 MPG (combined) 26 Fuel Economics: Cost to Drive 25 Miles $2.48 Fuel to Drive 25 Miles 0.96 gal Cost of a Fill-up $33.67 Miles on a Tank 339 miles Tank Size 14.5 gal Annual Fuel Cost $1490

35 liters I made 258 kilometers/160 miles liters to gallons = 9.24602183 160 / 9.24602183 = 17.3047396 17.3 mpg is not right for that car, he should be getting mid 20s. I think his measurements are off though. Fill the tank up all the way and set your trip meter to zero. Next time you refill, fill up again and divide the miles traveled by amount of gas you have to put in to fill the tank again.
| well, the estimate numbers for the car are always optimum conditions, A/C off... now, when you factor in the air conditioner, quality of the fuel used, the actual drive itself... there is enough +/- to believe it. maybe there IS something wrong with his car, but something that would effect fuel economy would be noticeable- engine missing, skipping, hesitation, the usual suspects.
