My step dad found a 2000 Chevy Silverado for 7900, less than 100K miles with a snow plow kit. We're not taking the plow, but it's got the setup on the front for it. V8, automatic, 4 wheel drive. We're going to take it, but I'm just curious as to thoughts on it.

Any opinions or advice?

lol...that's one of the selling points, actually.

Basically, anything that's not a Ford was a selling point.

Weak points are U-joints, brake lines will be starting to rust through if they haven't been done, front hubs, rear disc brakes (if it has them) and transfer case electronics.

Towards the end of my time with GM I was starting to do quite a few steering racks in these as well.

2000 is too old... especially from here.
having a plow on a truck just beats the piss out of them, puts an assload of stress on the front of the truck. You're better off getting one that DID NOT have a plow. Also, the 2000's were not so great for corrosion. It wasn't until 02 or 03 that the rust issues were ironed out.

What Sam said. Plow work is tough. Also the push button electronic 4wd is a weak point. Probably okay though if you don't drive through creeks too much. Hopefully there is an aftermarket fix or update. GM went back to the floor shift lever sometime in the early? 2000's I think. I'd stay with GM but pick a different truck, maybe go out of state if you have the time and can save bucks, re reg not too difficult etc.

Well, I looked at it. No rust, guessing whoever had it bought it, intended to plow with it, and didn't when the gas crisis hit. The plow had no marks on it and a truck usually gets dinged up pretty bad when you plow snow and ice with it.

I'm waiting to see the title to see exactly where it came from before I pass any real judgment, my step dad never listens to me anyway.

No running boards, no scratches, looks pretty good, even the paint and chrome were still shiny, but looks can be deceiving, I know. I crawled around underneath, I couldn't see any rust or anything that looked out of the ordinary. Four brand new tires, rims were clean, no rust or marks that I could see, not even the paint was chipped. I started it, it sounded good, quiet, but again, that can be deceiving too.

I know what you'll say Sam, so you can save it. I know I'm no car person, but I'm just going by what I see right now. We'll have it looked at asap too, before we make any decisions.

The only plow trucks I have ever trusted were the ones were the owners changed out the tranny fluid and filter at the start of winter and at the end. A bit excessive, but it helps.

The 4.8 is a fucking great motor, plenty of power, reliable as hell, and good fuel economy.

edit: 4.8 = 310 horsepower to 325 horsepower and 285 lb·ft to 305 lb·ft
5.3 = 285-305 hp,torque is 325 lb·ft to 335 lb·ft

in the real world, the 4.8L is a gutless turd. It sounds great on paper, but the 5.3L is the better engine.

My GMC has the 4.8, it's the only part of that truck that hasn't fucked up. And it's usually towing a car trailer.

No complaints at all.

you are in the minority.
here in the Adirondacks, the 5.3L is the preferred V8.
everyone I know that has a pickup with the smaller engine always says the same thing, 'it just doesn't feel like it's got enough power. the transmission is always shifting.' Keep in mind, we live in the mountains, so that extra displacement helps.

Hp and tq mean nothing unless the peak occurs in the right segment of rpm ladies. 350hp at 5900 rpm and 400lbtq at 5500 rpm are pretty useless towning a boat down the interstate with a 4 speed automatic.
