How long has it been since you've done acid?

I think people have come to expect a certain amount of meaningless double-talk in an artist statement. Going on about your desire to create a piece that is "contemporary yet timeless," "ground-breaking yet familiar," "abstract but highly symbolic," or "comforting while at the same time truly terrifying" is sure to win over the curators.

Or, don't listen to me. My artist statement was uniformly blasted by the faculty for being "unprofessional" -- it was about how artist statements are usually just a bunch of meaningless double-talk.

edit: grammarz

Thats because most people in charge of art based businesses have their heads placed very far up their own asses.

My artist statement?

We had to do these in school, but I never knew what to write. I felt like anything I could have come up with would have been a lie. Why did I make this painting? It's just what I do. Not trying to make a statement or change the world or entertain anyone. I do it because I want to.

Many people attending the show have never visited UER and haven't the pleasure of getting to know your wonderful personality.

What do you want those people to know about you?

I'm getting called into my professors office today because I said just that.

That's frustrating. Maybe make your statement about how you have no statement. Some regurgitated shit about how the viewer is supposed to interpret everything on their own.

Simply write "Have you heard of New Criticism?" and call it a day.

true story, I was asked to write an artist statement for a body of work that I had in a show a number of years back. I wrote "go fuck yourself", and that is what was posted next to my bio on the wall.

...In walked hydrotherapy. She was so tall and so beautiful you wanted to just give her all your money right way and skip the preliminaries. She had a UER t-shirt on, featuring a map of the Northeast US, and it was easy to tell just how mountainous the topography of Vermont really was. Her blonde hair hung down sort of like what Beethoven had in mind when he wrote the Moonlight Sonata. She wore jeans so tight it looked as if she'd been poured into them and forgot to say When. When she moved, she seemed to undulate under her clothes in ways that took a man's mind off the state of the economy.

She said, "Did you come here to explore, or just to check me out?"

tune in, turn on, cop out.

Saying art is for art's own sake or for the sake of the artist is like saying a hammer is just for putting in a toolbox.

Turns out my professor actually liked my work, he just was unsure about the intent. I told him that I've been making incendiary devices cast as clown faces.

Gotta go weld.
