Secret Rooms and Mysteries

Anyone find any? Not just rooms you don't have access too, but forgotten rooms which no one knows about.

Similar to Urbex research, there was one old timer here who spoke to be about a rumor of an IT storage room in our 10-story building. IT for our operation isn't in this building except a few people. I'm more a project manager. However anyway there used to be an IT rep in this building until she quit years ago.

From what I hear she flew by the seat of her pants and never followed protocol. That made it even more plausible that there'd be this room no one really knew about.

So, using the info provided to me, I found the location on 10th floor which seemed plausible. I asked departments on that flow if they knew of the room or had a key. None did. They asked their managers, and managers on adjoining floors to try their master keys, that didn't work. I asked the cleaning staff, keys didn't work. I tried building security, keys didn't work.

Finally someone gave me a clue of asking some guy with an office in the basement. His job was something completely different than what goes on at the upper floors, never heard of the room either, but someone had access to every key of the building. Finally we had the right key, open up the room, and walk into an IT storage room sealed in time for about 3 years.

You can visualize it, all PC cases were white, not black. All monitors were CRT. All mice/keyboards PS/2, just a whole bunch of vintage crap that no one in this building, or downtown even really knew existed.

This wasn't that cool. E.g. not like finding an unknown server still running, or a server hidden behind a dry walled room or anything. Anyone find anything like this ever? Other examples:

[damn, I'm googling like crazy to find another story from MIT where something strange like all the power in the building was routed through a myster computer in a closet or something]

I can't say I found a room but I did find all kinds of media from ages ago at my last job. When we were shutting down the plant due to a sale we found two old safes located in an old upper warehouse area. Opened them up and out pops old media and junk. It was like hitting the jackpot. There were all these old manuals, hardware, and media that had been forgotten since the plant was bought in 96. I was able to rescue some of the stuff. I'll post some pics if I have the gumption to get in the attic and find the stuff.

Awesome. I couldn't for the life of me remember enough specifics on that to google it. That's what I was referring to though.

back in the day when i was doing desktop support i worked in an aircraft engine plant that had slowly been expanded piecemeal since the 50s. they would add bump outs on the back every ten years or so until it was 1/4 km long, but the bumpouts would be usually only half the width of the plant at a time. this meant down the center of the plant was ajoint that had at one time or another been an outside wall

at one time there was a cable attached to the building. it ended up inside obviously with these odd renovations. Anyways, we thought it was our own 500 pair tie cable, it came in the building at the front and brought us DT for the PBX. there were local extensions patched to it as well all through the plant. when we upgraded the drops to cat 5 in the 90s this cable became redundant, so we thought. We were going through it and found DT on about 10 pairs, we assumed they were simply forgotten analog extensions on our pbx feeding in. so on a quiet saturday the phone guy got a couple of us techies in just for muscle and we started to cut. At the front of the shop we took a reciprocating saw to the cables. at the back we noticed 2 of the 5 cables went into a conduit in the floor. we chopped it flush (the facilities guys said the conduit went to a monument in the back parking lot)

we pulled out this HUGE amount of cable, and headed on our merry way.

monday morning we see MANY trucks from ma bell milling around in the streets behind the plant. only after they toned the cable and it led right to the plant did we realize what we did. turns out back in the 50s there was a property line right down the center of what is this plant today and bell had a few cables on poles
as the plant expanded slowly the cable was swallowed by the plant. it was long forgotten that the cable was bells and not ours...

anyways. bell spent a couple of days running new cable AROUND the plant.
