I just came up with an idea to bring back Advanced Readstates in the Forum for everyone...

Right now, I do an archiving run every now and again, which archives any threads older than 3 months. These are actually moved to different tables and the readstates are deleted. This helps speed up the site immensely.

So here's what I'm thinking: Bring back "advanced" readstates in the forum only, for all those who want them (for free), with one change: The readstates only work for threads that have had a post in the last 30 days.

That keeps UER from digging through thousands of older threads, while still allowing you to have the same level of readstates functionality for "current" threads, including instantly knowing how far you read.

I could even have it delete readstates from the DB older than a month for a person who isn't a premium member. Premium members would get to keep the full readstates and also get full readstates in the location database.

I think this could really work.

Sounds promising, but let's not rush into anything too quickly.

What are the criteria you're using for determining when to send a forum thread off to the archives? Are the criteria the same for all of the forums on the main page? Obviously the Encyclopedia and the Journals are special cases - are there any others?

I ask because I noticed some strange things while browsing the forums trying to get an idea of how much time the posts in each active forum cover.

The second column is the most recent post date (taken from the main page). The dates in the third column are taken from the last post of the last thread (or last few threads) in each of the active forums.

UE Main Dec 10 2010 -> Feb 1 2004
UE Photography Dec 10 2010 -> Sep 4 2010 + 1 thread from 2005

Contact a Moderator Dec 9 2010 -> Sep 5 2010
Other Dec 10 2010 -> Sep 4 2010 + 7 threads from 2008-4

I see now that something special's going on with UE Main and Forum Announcements too, but you can see what I'm getting at, right? There seems to be a glitch preventing the odd thread from sliding off to the archive on schedule. Is there any chance that the same glitch is causing extraneous amounts of outdated read-state data to pile up and slow down the forums as a whole?

Yeah there's something funny with the old threads, I need to see what is going on there.
