It has been snowing quite a bit yesterday (5cm is quite a bit here) and I spent an hour driving trough the back paths (non-plowed or salted) so I could drift with my bike. Great fun.
Roads are like this.

Now my bike looks like this

Other than that I biked to university and the city and back, a total of about 15 km. I guess half of it on pure white roads.

Do you ever bike in snow, either out of necessity or for fun?

P.S. My bike is my only way of transportation, I don't own a car. Or I could take PT but that's quite overcrowded in this weather, and takes longer than walking.

Yeah, I've been winter cycling regularly for about 10 years. Mostly commuting and transportation. I also don't drive, but I take public transit fairly often too. Actually, this year I've been a lazy-ass and haven't been cycling to work very much.

Here are some photos from last winter's ice bike races here in Toronto. I didn't participate, but took lots of photos. A few years ago I did the "rubber race" (with no studded tires) and had a blast.

Nice post, thanks. I love snow biking. I find its very similar to sand biking, in that you have to lean back a lot and keep the front tire from drifting and washing out.I also ride a mountain bike (mostly) to do this in the sierras so the snow can be really deep. If the snow is packed on the trail and you have a decent grade though... woo-hoo!
