Review: Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit

since we're all guys and car guys at that, i am sure some of us own game systems hand play racing games. Since 1998, I have been a big fan of the Need For Speed series. I got NFS II SE and Hot Pursuit at the same time and mastered Hot Pursuit with an obsessiveness that was almost scary. I was huge into downloading fan-made cars and tracks and still have them saved to an appendix disc with my cop of NFSIII.. I stayed with the series as a result, although the past couple of outings have left me cold. Anyways, I was a huge fan of Need For Speed Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted and Carbon. When Prostreet came out, the WTF light went off... When Undercover dropped in 08, again, what the fuck? And finally, Shift? Which was a sim? Was there no hope for the glory days of Underground/2? Most Wanted? Carbon?

So this year, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit dropped. The reviews are positive, but so far, I am finding very little to get excited over. Let's start with the obvious: the environments are gorgeous. I mean, if you have a BIG tv, you will fap yourself to sleep over the racing environments. But that's where the fap-o-rama ended for me. The cars are mostly either high-end exotics, or run of the mill sports cars. There is no manual shift option. No in car view. No customization other than color choice. And there is no tuning feature. Basically, here's the car, drive it there.

That's only my first lap of bitching. The AI is ridiculous. They apparently are not running by the same rule of physics as your car. The cop chases are also a bit on the 'are you kidding me?' side. And the cars just don't have that 'feel' that other games have. Also, for me, the lack of something of a storyline left the game feeling impersonal, something like an arcade whore that you drop coin in, play mercilessly when you have nothing better to do and then forget about. As lame as this sounds, the other outings at least tried to involve you in the plotline and give you a beginning, middle and end. This is just 'ok, here are some cars, they have some cars, race them, run from the cops and try not to get caught or you will have to race them again. yay.'
Where's the fun in that?

One thing that EA/Criterion is crowing about is the Autolog feature. Basically, all this does is compare your time to people on your friends list that have this game so you can feel superior to them and talk shit. Oh goody. I just beat your time because i sit in my mom's basement and have no life. This, to me, is a waste of run time. I would've rather seen that above bitches addressed.

Would I have bought this game? No. It was a late christmas present. Personally, if i were going to buy a game, it would've been either Blur or I would have waited for Dirt 3 to drop. If you aren't the Forza/GT5 type, this game is for you, but for the type of gaming I prefer, this game is pretty much a waste of time.

There was some racing game for the XBOX360 I really liked that I can't remember now that had like basically all sorts of cars ranging from the econo box to the super high powered exotics that made each track fun.

I wanna design a driving game with real life goals. Something like: Its 3am. You have school in the morning. Your pretty buzzed but alright to drive. You are at the wheel of a 84 Ford Ranger, 2.3 with a 4 speed. You have 22 miles to cover in 30 minutes. And you must arrive silent, coast in as not to wake your parents. All the normal obstacles are off the table. We talkin real life. Narrow roads with 3' deep ditches on both sides. Mail boxes. The "other" drunks on the road. Couple of cops. Not infinity of cops, a couple. As your skil level goes up, you can play on different settings.

Easy: good tires, working head lights, nice weather.

Normal: out of alignment, right rear bald from too many pegleg burnouts, raining, one head light out on low beam.

Hard:right rear tire showing wire, and low, all other tires bald, only one working head light, and its on low beam, snowing, you move from buzzed to shitfaced, with slower controls.

Expert: your on a rim, clutch slips, icy conditions, your drunk from Yagerbombs so your jittery too, and no head lights working except when you hit a bump, plus someone gave your tag # to the cops when you left the party.

Anyone else wanna play that game?

I believe that the problem is EA games. I gave up on them years ago because of their policy of pumping out shitty games before they are refined. The one and only game that they put any time and effort into is Madden NFL. All of their other titles are hurried up, pumped out crap. A prime example of this was MOH : Pacific Assault. If you got that game then you surely remember not being able to play it until EA released patches to fix all of the problems. That is absolutely unacceptable to me.

PS - All of the game makers should take an example from Rockstar Games. They do it right and have reaped the benefits of that.

ALL is not sweetness and light in the land or Rockstar Games... a couple of years ago, they dropped Midnight Club: Los Angeles, which I bought and have a ball playing, BUT i have several bitches about it that were shared by game reviewers and other players: IT WAS TOO FUCKING HARD! (lol) Also, the online play while fun, had it's bugs. If you were changing cars while someone else was changing cars, you Xbox would lock up and you'd have to shut it down, reboot and rejoin your room. Now, what's the problem with that? MC:LA was a slow-loading motherfucker out of the dashboard.

True. I can't argue that. But overall Rockstar makes much better games than EA.

The best developers of racing games are Codemasters, Polyphony, and Turn 10.

i played GT5 on my friends PS3 and to be honest, I wasn't impressed. I think Forza 3 is a more involving game and has a better interface with the cars. Granted, there aren't as many cars in Forza 3, but how fucking many cars DO YOU NEED?
My friend was whining about being able to put an LS1 in an Aveo... I just laughed, "IT'S A GAME, FUCKO!"
