It was a registered historic building in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Demolished in the mid eighties to make room for a small industrial park.

Most, (not all) online reference work list it as still standing.

This was just north of the current Job Corps Building, on Western Avenue, IIRC.

As to why... you are looking at a host of mayors, including Luken (the most anti-city mayor you can imagine), who advocated for the wholesale demolition and redevelopment of what is now Queensgate, the West End and OTR. Thankfully, only Queensgate was developed - as a low density industrial park.

Section 108 was not available at the time, and federal funds were used for the demolition of that building and countless others.

There was a time when Cincinnati was feeling left behind by all of the modernization and urban renewal that many other cities were experiencing. The city was embarrassed that they were looking old and dated. It explained the demo of more than a few cool old buildings. If you want proof that it was embarrassment look no further than Alms and Doepke now beautifully restored, but for years it was covered in truly hideous aluminum siding to make it look more modern.

The Samuel Hannaford (A&D) building was considered an eyesore, so it was covered with garish, but modern aluminum panels. Ironically, but unsurprisingly this just caused a case of "If it ain't broke, fix it till it is." The result was just...awful, I can't even find a pic online.

Fortunately the city slowly began to realize it was destroying (and covering up) it's heritage and began to reverse it's policies. And although some progress has been made the fight is far from over, some buildings are still at risk and too many buildings have already been lost forever.

Too many for us to let any more fall...

What's the name of that one elementary/middle school near UC's main campus? Can't remember the name of it, but it was an early 20th century building that was beautifully restored. CPS (Cincinnati Public Schools) got something right for a change.
