What's the good, bad, and ugly. I'm gonna need a beater, and they seem to be priced decent ($800-1500) I have seen em with 400,000 plus thousand miles on em running good. I know they are slow, but is there anything else I should know?

Just watch for rust... pretty much an indestructible car otherwise.

I have a customer with an `81 300TD with 950,000 km on it.

I always really wanted to swap one of those engines into a Cherokee or Tracker or something.

They also like boost:

At $800, does it matter as long as you get 6 months of driving out of it?

I'm with Nismo on this one. I love them, and oddly enough, I was just thinking about getting an older Mercedes, and particularly a diesel, as my next car.

Or a Caprice, or a Roadmaster, or a P71 Crown Vic, or, or, or...

Just gotta lose the big yellow corner lenses to something that blends in a bit better. Looks like two big fucking school buses at each corner

Agreed. A different grill would also help.

I only liked the station wagons with the orange/tan interior. They were not quite odd like a Volvo, but somewhat more polished if you know what I mean.

Though...I hear the electrical on the MB diesels can be a bitch to work with.

I looked into base 190's a couple of years ago because they're so cheap, and comfortable, good size etc. Apparently the gas base model (2.1) is gutless, and has a common engine fail. Timing chain? can't remember off hand.

Also they may handle okay, (or awesome on some models) but for some reason MB has avoided rack and pinion steering. Not saying they must use it, but seems kind of different, being a proven winning design and all. I'd love a 190 TD wagon 5 speed if they make a wagon. The 300 is kind of big. MB diesels are famously good. Convert to waste oil, and it's free fuel baby.

you ARE a nut.

says the guy who sincerely believes his but ugly cobalt SS with racing stripes, a "Got DOHC" license plate and a shopping cart load of tacky, plastic pep-boys sourced aftermarket accessories is anything but a steaming pile of NASCAR inspired assblood.

ford taurus' have DOHC too...how l33t

on the real note. Any diesel benz from the 80s is built like a fucking tank. A buddy of mine has a 81 300TD with 470,000km on it and still going. He's not crazy about driving a station wagon and over the years has bought a few other, "sportier" cars and all have crapped out on him...eventually, he always goes back to the TD. thing just refuses to die.

I just think its funny how you constantly shit talk other peoples rides (and tastes), when you yourself drive an uncontroversially ugly and pathetic car. If you were just rockin an un-modded cobalt and hadnt tacked it out to the nines, Id keep my mouth shut. But your car (as currently configured) is like the epitome of the white trash lifestyle. The way you shamelessly pimp it out as being something thats in any way desirable, is just plain annoying.

We're talking about classic benzs that thousands of people actually collect and still drive almost 30yrs later. how many people do you think will be driving fucking cobalts in 30yrs? How many cobalts will live past 300,000km before rusting to shit and falling apart? Nobody will bother collecting cobalts (especially ones with racing stripes) because they're ugly and CHEAP.

They may not be to your, shall we say "unique" tastes, but dont call other people nuts for thinking that classic mercedes are nice and something that may be worth owning. they're indestructible tanks that have outlived almost anything on the road, and actually still look good doing it.
