Man ive been working on cars every single day for the past 3 weeks. I wash my hands at least 10 times a day and shit, my hands are dry as hell and starting to crack open. How the hell do mechanics keep their hands in good condition, aside from wearing gloves? Youve still gotta wash your hands after wearing mechanics gloves. Those latex pussy gloves dont cut it either!

I can't work in gloves, just can't... but yeah, this time of year, if I even move my hands, they just start to bleed since they're so dry.

Not to be obvious, but have you tried lotion? And stay away from harsh cleaners and keep your hands out of solvent. I like lanolin based hand cleaners. They typically work well enough and they leave your hands soft.

GRM did an article about hand cleaners in the November of 08 issue. Dawn and coffee grounds outcleaned everything else. I have used Dawn and sand, and it works well. Always lotion after washing with anything abrasive or really strong.

mine get all cracked this time of year because of the cold water in the lab, the caustic on my hands, being in heavy rubber gloves and the cold on the way in and out...

for some reason only my left hand gets dry, my right stays nice and soft all the time...........

i use black latex gloves and a good hand cleaner. WORX from matco is pretty amazing

Guess i gotta start using lotion. Ive tried to use latex gloves lots of times. I rip them beyond use within the first 5 minutes. Maybe im abusive?

I do wear the black nitriles whenever possible. Mine last for hours of wrenching, but my brother in law shreds them in seconds. I guess it's because I'm used to working in tight spaces and know where my hand can and can't fit.

bag balm to heal them, then vaseline deep moisture to maintain. i do it all winter because my hands dry out so fast and i might have reynauds too
so keeping them moisturized keeps them from hurting too badly.

I get the big box of vinyl gloves from Home Depot. They hold up pretty well.

Seriously though: Landscaping, my past work of many years, (durt diggin) vacuums moisture like a vacuum, so try Aveeno Cream with colonial oatmeal in the handy pump dispenser.

Fast Orange has been working pretty well. I had a couple more cars to work on than usual these past 2 weeks, and my hands are getting better. Pretty sweet.
