Probe clears Toyota's electronic throttles

By John Crawley and David Lawder, Reuters

WASHINGTON — A government investigation showed no link between electronic throttles and unintended acceleration in Toyota Motor Corp vehicles, a victory for the world's top automaker battered by recalls over runaway vehicles.

The encouraging result for Toyota stems from a 10-month probe ordered by Congress following recalls of nearly 8 million of its best-selling models in the United States over defective floor mats and accelerator pedals that hurt its reputation for quality.

Some safety advocates and congressional investigators questioned whether software-driven throttles also played a role in unintended acceleration complaints.

"There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.

Toyota's U.S.-traded shares were up 4.5 percent in afternoon trade on the New York Stock Exchange, after the release of the findings.

Although Toyota has cleared a major hurdle in its ongoing safety saga, regulators said they would consider imposing requirements for all vehicles to have braking systems that automatically counteract any instances of unintended acceleration.

Toyota, which has put electronically controlled throttles in its vehicles since 2002, has consistently said those systems were safe.

The probe by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA engineers found that the only causes of the unwanted acceleration were the previously identified sticking accelerator pedals and loose floormats that could jam the pedals.

Those problems were the root of massive recalls in 2009 and 2010 that rocked Toyota to its foundations and saw President Akio Toyoda come to Washington a year ago to tell U.S. lawmakers he was "deeply sorry."

U.S. regulators are looking into 89 deaths that may be associated with sudden acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles but have so far linked only a handful to the floor mat problem.

Toyota has paid nearly $50 million in fines linked to the recalls and to settle accusations it failed to notify U.S. officials in a timely way about defects.

Although the electronic throttle investigation turned up no flaws that would prompt another massive recall, Toyota still faces significant risks from scores of civil lawsuits stemming from the recalls.

Those cases in federal and state courts, which may turn on the timing of company disclosures to regulators of already established defects, have an estimated potential liability of up to $10 billion.

Toyota on Tuesday posted a smaller-than-expected fall in third-quarter profit and hiked its sales forecast for the year to March 31 by 70,000 vehicles to 7.48 million, thanks to better-than-expected sales in Asia, Japan and Russia.

Interesting article for sure. Needs more detail though, if not many floor mat problems, and not the electronic throttle, then what? not enough lube on the accelerator pedal cable or linkage? Many more questions, my wee mind is not totally convinced.

Good thing NASA is involved and being proactive, we wouldn't want the throttle sticking on the Shuttle. They might end up on Uranus...

Looks like this Probe has a few problems of it's own. Euro Stunt Pron warning.
Has to be one of the funniest car names though.

If you think of your average Toyota driver, this is not really surprising.

that's just it. there is NO cable or linkage. it's throttle by wire. potentiometer on the pedal controls an electric motor inside the throttle body to turn the blade via the ecu.

this entire problem was due to floor mats slipping forward and the pedal sticking on them. the recall procedure at toyota involved cutting the bottoms off the gas pedals. my best friend (RIP) worked there during all this and he did a ton of these everyday.

happened to me in an ML today, floored it carpet got stuck to the peddle.
took me a second to figure out what was happening but I dumped the vehicle into neutral and slid the carpet out with my foot.

Pretty easy stuff

Maybe Samarui can clarify this, but my understanding on GM's Drive-by-Wire system, there is a deadman's switch for the PCM that is triggered through the use of the E-brake (not the brake alone, but a separate circuit that is completed when its triggered) but Toyota does NOT have such a feature.

That would be interesting to know.

I remember the former UER member Pathfinder which Samarai used to know, had an 05 Cobalt LT and among having the shifter replaced due to that issue, the e-brake had to replaced too because the deadman's switch was stuck so he'd start the car and it shut off...

If I don't have the factory all weather floor mat pulled back in my '03 Silverado, the pedal will stick. I guess I should alert the media.

We knew all along it wasn't anything to do with the ECU's in the cars, it was a mechanical problem, further more a supplier issue. We own the supplier I believe, Denso, and production was haulted when the recalls came out. Both production at Cambridge Ontario and in Nummi California. Oh, and when they shut down the Nummi plant (General Motors pulled out) Toyota built a new plant in Blue Springs Mississippi where they will produce the Corolla and Matrix. Around 120,000 units yearly. A little more rumors for people to pounder over, in Woodstock Ontario Toyota is looking at building a second plant that will produce the Scion, not entirely sure which one.

Me neither, most GMs accelerate just fine with the e brake applied (beds in the rear pads on squealing minivans)

my 05 Cobalt was a mechanical linkage/cable from accelerator to throttle if I remember right.

Man i dont know what kind of 1000hp Toyotas these people were driving, but if i were to apply firm pressure to the brake pedal in the cars they were driving, it would stop the car even if the engine was WOT.

This all seems borderline insane. How in this day and age could they not think (Starting 15+ years ago or whatever) to just put a shiny plastic no stick patch where the gas pedal meets the floor mat. And even more obvious, put some of those simple push clips or something to hold mats in place until lifted out for cleaning.

I used to pull the drivers mat back whenever I drove my Dad's R5 because it would bunch up under the accelerator, and I was concerned he would not have full throttle capacity, meaning the car would basically not be able to move forward at all.
