After seeing the burning Priuseses, do firefighters have to treat them differently than a normal car fire? And the Volt, and the Leaf? In my teens I worked at a kinda upscale golf course and we were told if a cart caught fire, just keep it from spreadin by wetting the ground around it and let it burn. Similar situation?

The only thing different I've seen from the leaflet that Toyota gave out to fire departments is the location where to cut the batteries. I haven't seen what Chevy or Nissan has offered in that kind of literature yet.

Firefighters I know do get training in dealing with battery fires; so I guess apply it to cars?

Most firefighters get special "training" on how to avoid electrocution with hybrids. This "training" is never anything more than "orange wire is bad" and a brochure telling them as much.

i just find the hybrids to be insulting. better mileage could've been achieved with a small-displacement, turbocharged diesel. Or even a small displacement, forced induction gasoline engine. Hybrids are marketing points aimed at a certain population who think they know something the rest of us don't.

i'll defer to Bandi on this, but I seem to remember him stating that his old, 90-something TDI Beetle, with something like 300,000+km on the clock, was still geting over 50mpg.... 50!

again, fuck your prius in the ass with a tdi cock.

I'd prefer a TDI any day of the week over a Prius, but if i can get a Prius for half the cost of a TDI, I'll probably get the Pruis.

Of course, this is all hypothetical talk, because I'd never buy a Prius, or TDI for that matter.

i still say that the TDI would be a better bet... Again, I'd have to defer to Bandi, but i was under the impression that the diesel Volkswagens were better assembled than the gasoline-powered cars.

Currently at 610,000 km... (basically 380,000 miles), not burning any oil yet, and averaging 62 mpg.

The car has never had a mechanical repair done to the engine or transmission since it was purchased brand new in '99. I can verify this because I have been the car's mechanic since day one.

So yes, fuck the Prius!

And it still looks pretty damn good if I may say so...

(edited to add shameless whoring of my beloved car)

I just find the diesel ones get driven a hell of a lot more... and that seems to make VWs last longer, I can't explain why, but it's true. Any TDI that I've ever seen fail has been old with low mileage.

The service manager at my dealership regularly tells customers shopping for a used TDI to look for one with over 300,000 km on it because it'll be a better car... and he's right.

It's magic or something, I dunno.

I am in NO WAY a fan of the Prius, Leaf, Volt etc.....
however it's the starting point for trying to serve a purpose. diesels, love em. diesels still are petroleum based, which is oil.

electrics, hybrids etc... are the starting point for moving away from the internal combustion engine. Some company HAD to do it. I don't think the internal combustion engine will ever go away, but just like the solar car races and everything that goes with them, it simply has to be explored.

but with a diesel, we're using LESS oil... but I see your point.

Keep in mind diesel can be manufactured pretty easily from veggie oil, too.

I'm seriously considering doing a biodiesel swap on my Jetta... after I finish the Golf rally car project.

now with the veggie oil conversation, can you run both fuels (diesel and veg oil) swapping back and forth, or once it's veggie, that's it?

Usually both. There is a guy here who has an aux tank in the back of his F350 Dually, he runs regular diesel till the engines nice and warm, and then switches over to veggi.

SteamPunk is working on a veggie conversion for his VW Diesel bus actually as we speak.

This is my prediction for the suburban home of the future: there will be two cars in the garage: one is a some sort of electric commuter vehicle for just going to work and going around town. The 2nd car will be a diesel truck, van or Jeep for weekends and road trips.

half the reason I am going to look at that Impreza tomorrow is that the Beretta is just shitty on gas.

Subie probably won't get a lot better mileage than the Beretta... they lose a lot of economy to the drivetrain.

And yeah, as far as I know, you can't start a diesel on veggie oil, so you have to start it on diesel, and switch it back to diesel before you shut it down as well, to make sure the injector lines are full of diesel for when you go to start it the next time.
