I understand that. I was referring to the MKIII with crappy original paint being covered in tape.

gotcha, cool beans.

Nismo, with fresh paint, its understandable, i wouldnt do it because all my cars have been built to be driven, chips come with the territory

When I had the Honda Passport, I used to read through and rarely post on IsuzuPlanet. While there was genius guys in there, there was some incredibly stupid people in there pushing out totally baseless information.

For example, I got banned for arguing with a moderator who kept claming that all Isuzus needed exactly 14 volts. Not 13.8; Not 14 volts with no accessories running, but 14 volts exactly at all times. Apparenty he put in a different alternator and put in a external regulator adjusted for that purpose. Its completely not true because even Isuzu says 13.8 with no accessories running and around 13.0 volts with accessories running in addition to that being the case with ALMOST EVERY CAR IN THE WESTERN WORLD.

In highschool I worked in a shop doing auto electric, rebuilding alts, and starters. Running a constant 14 under all conditions will overcharge your battery and shortin its life. If he is lucky. Or it could cause a batter explosion, which to be honest, unless you have seen one happen, you do not know the horrific power of that. It will total a car. And severely damage a fire truck, ask me how I know.

I had the battery explode in the trunk of a Mercedes 560 SL while I was changing a tail light bulb... it was literally like a bomb going off, tore the trunk hinges from the lid, and put me on my ass, luckily I was okay.

Batteries store potential energy. And a lot of it. The worst one we had, a fire truck from the local dept. came in and pulled right up to our bay door, he left it running and came in to talk to my boss. He was tellin him he thought either the guage was bad or the regulator because it was reading fully to the right, as I walked up the batter compartment on the passenger side of the truck just exploded. I mean it was deafening. Shook the entire building, ripped the door off of the fire trucks compartment and sent it THROUGH the side of a Pontiac Grand Am a customer had brought in to have her batter tested. Luckily she had already gone inside. It totaled her car, since the door went through the drivers door, ripped across the dash and out of the passenger side ripping the pillar for the windshield in two. It was the scariest car related incident I have ever witnessed, and I am extra careful dealing with car batteries now, I just never knew how much force those types of explosions can release.

i had a battery in a 70 Beetle explode... no idea why. I was in the drivers side holding the seat up, Sean was pulling the battery out and it just fucking exploded! BANG! sent him flying out of the car and into the side of the garage hard enough where it knocked him silly for a couple of minutes. He was covered in sulfuric acid and plastic chunks. It ruined that interior which sucked because it was going in Seans' 72. (black looks better than brown)

i have seen house current start a car... there are probably 17,000 reasons why this should NOT have worked, but it was grand... My friend Matt had an 83 Ford Fairmont Futura sedan. It was a 3.3L/200 I6 with an automatic. Anyways, the battery had gone dead and I needed a ride home. Didn't have another car to jump it, didn't have a jumper back, no battery charger, nothing... so Matt goes out into his shed and pulls out an old extension cord, cuts the female end off it and starts stripping insulation back.

"What are you doing?"

"making the mother of all jumper cables."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

"Should I dial 911 now, or at least wait until you get electrocuted?"

He smiles and tells me to get in the car and turn the key forward and just keep it in the 'start' position. With the wire ends apart, he plugs the male into the socket, takes the stripped wires and touches them to the battery posts. You have never in your life heard an engine turn over like that! There was a flash, the car started and Matt goes flying backwards across the lawn while simultaneously the lights in the kitchen, on the porch, and in the shed die. (Blew a breaker). Now, this came with a price because his shirt was blackened and he did get arc flash burns on his wrists, but the way that Matt was, this was just icing on the cake to a great story.

Now everyone I have told that story to on the j-body forum has told me that is impossible and it utter bullshit. So, feel free to tell me why it worked.

Holy shit!!!!!!! My neighbor passed out drunk, forgetting his battery being charged @50amps (quick start setting) This was being done in the garage right below my apartment.

As I walked downstairs, I saw his battery, bloated, and bulging, shooting steam up thru the six holes (The caps blew of moments before)

I walked up and pulled the leads off, thank god they didn't spark.........I was a bit drunk at the time too.........

I had no idea that I could have been killed?

Shit, why wouldn't house current work..........You can run a 12volt alt in a six volt system for a minute, how long did it take to crank that car? 3 seconds?

Once it's running on it's own alt, it should be good to go. As long as nothing got cooked.........I'll bet the regulator probably got fried?

the car turned over INSTANTLY with a FURY and a really really really angry/bad/whiny sound from the starter... in fact, if i remember right, 5 minutes afterwards, there was still smoke coming off the solenoid on the firewall.

Sounds like something I might try in desperation to get an 89 Delta 88 running, But not on anything nice/dear to my heart.

I have a feeling that the AC side of the alernator was picking up somehow the main power enough to be a motor, generating just enough DC power out of it and backfeeding DC into the starter for it crank, but you can't backfeed DC into AC that long for things to go FUBAR.

Many, many years ago I delivered parts for NAPA. Yes, the little truck with the big hat on it. I frickin' hated that. Anyway, one day I was delivering several parts to a diesel shop (they only worked on big trucks). The place had three bays. The left and middle bay doors were closed, so I entered the right door. Unbeknownst to me, an idiot had left a truck battery on a charger in the far left bay. Apparently he had left it on the charger all night. I got approximately ten feet into the bay and KABOOM!!! I mean mortar shell kind of kaboom! I was thrown three or four feet through the air and landed while parts and pieces of battery were landing on/bouncing off of me. I was unhurt and somehow no one else was hurt. Everything that was near that battery was obliterated. Tool boxes, carts, fenders, a hood, etc., all totally unrecognizable. My ears were ringing for approximately twenty four hours after that. I'll never forget it.

Prius backs have a bunch of small cells. Think more along the line of a TON of M-80s instead of a stick of dynamite.

I've had cells vent in cordless drill packs and such, but never extremely violently. They have always vented properly for me. I've had automotive batteries vent on me, but never explode. Heck, I didn't really consider what would happen when the vent didn't work.

The only battery I have witnessed actually exploding was when someone was jump starting a car and didn't realize they got the terminals mixed up. You could hear the battery bubbling, but when the guy started up the dead battery car, KAPOW!

You know how in "Back to the Future" how after the DeLorean left that fire trail? Imagine that except all over the engine bay, hood, the other car, the jumper cables and the ground.
