I've heard of brand new cars being branded as salvage vehicles. Slice the top of a convertible, steal the wheels, seats, and NAV system, now you're down to the point where they'd rather write the car off than repair it.

I've seen with some the losses of new cars enroute from the factory to the dealer, the vehicles were considered by the insurance company to be still sellable, but with a salvage title. Usually, the insurance then will sell it via its auction channels; most cases another dealer will take it and fix it.

three vehicles at the autoshop i went to school at were salvage vehicles... all suffered damage in shipping and they were written off and donated, never to see the road again.

Years ago I purchased a Cavalier for about $600. It was a primer colour and needed a paint job but the price was good and it was certified.

The windshield was cracked but they'd put a used one in the back seat. Now I don't believe that a cracked windshield would give you a safety certification - one red flag.

I get it home and begin to clean it out. I lift up the floor mat and notice the carpet was loose.... lift up the carpet to find that the asshat who sold it had put plastic bags down over the holes in the floor and tarred it.

Took it back, pleaded a bit and got a refund minus $30 for the $5 in gas that the idiot used to drive me to the Ministry.

Lesson learned.

^this car... paid $100 for it in 2000. All the way home, the smell was killing me. Finally made it home and started cleaning it out... fuck a duck! garbage wedged under the seats, used food aging... the coup de gras was the dead animal carcass in the trunk. I ended up pulling the interior out of the car; carpet, back seat, door panels, console, headliner, insulation under the carpet... all gone.
the car lasted a couple of months before I chunked a main bearing.

For $100, I'd have zero problem taking a car to the demo derby. That's not a GM thing, that's a $100 crap can thing. Any car becomes a crap can when the owner wedges garbage under the seats and tosses a possum in the trunk.

For a second there, before clicking on the image, I sort of thought it was a Delorean Not trying to razz ya... Must be the red highlighting the fascia? or something.

When I worked for the rally team, we ended up with 4 brand new 2008 Mitsubishi Lancers for free... one had a mashed front fender, one had a mashed passenger side, and the other two had bad roof damage (They were involved in a derailment)

2 with roof damage served as donor cars for Comrie-Picard's evo x, one got made into a race car, and I'm not allowed to say what happened to the other one...

Yeah, some of my best deals I have picked up is a car with a salvage title. And, you can take it across the boarder to GA, title it at a friends house, then retitle it back home and magically its not salvage anymore. Not that I have done that. And it wouldn't pass a carfax test, but it does remove it from the current title.

.....Thank you for that little piece of info! HAHA! See...I have this 2001 Jeep Wrangler and it has a salvage title and......

It wouldn't be put up for sale. I'm just interested in building a Jeep and the 93 is looking to be a bit of a pain in the ass right now.

This reminds me of something that Ken Block told us E-Crew guys while we were fishing his car out. He said he has a piece from his wrecked cars as a memento; his co-driver goes "You mean that other Focus with the manufacturer plates?"

His piece collection must be getting huge, Block can't seem to get into a rally car without destroying it!

Yes, we are already taking bets on what stage he will wreck his vehicle on at Oregon Trail 2011. My bet he will hit the same tree as last year
