So, I'm by far no newbie to body mod, I've had everything pierced twice and I've got sleeves of tattoos, but I'm really, REALLY curious about branding. Anybody ever done it? Anyone know anything about it?

What kind are you talking? Straight burning it in? (If you're thinking about strike-branding...you have balls.)

I have a scarification on my shoulder that was done by having it cut in. I know a bit about it in general. I guess ask and I shall try?

How easy is it to find a shop that does it?

How much do they charge for a, say, 10" x 10" brand?

What are the aftercare procedures?

Is it safe to just 'man up' and do it at home?

a 10x10 brand will actually have to be done in stages. a brand that size will warp tremendously, so most branding irons are kept under 3x3 or so. the healing process is crucial here due to the extreme risk of infection, etc.

do NOT do this at home. the burns you receive are no different than those that kill people. the process tends to be pretty pricey because a skilled blacksmith has to design, build and finish the brand; typically from surgical stainless. this is a VERY niche body mod. we have very excellent branders in tampa, though.

You are right with the exception that most of the time a blacksmith is NOT involved at all, instead of a one piece branding iron like you would see in say branding of cattle or something of that nature, the brand is done using a series of straight and curved irons heated and "struck" in sequence to create the desired shape and pattern.
Cautery lazer branding is also a popular option that allows for a much more detailed brand.

Also to reiterate Slow. DO NOT BRAND AT HOME!

I'm planning to get a cutting done. I was told my design would take eight strike brands and was to small for that so a cutting, or scarification I guess, would be the better option.

well branding, cuttings, dermabrasion and so on are all forms of scarification but yeah anywho. If you are going for a small more detailed design a "skin removal" cutting might be your bast bet due to it's more predictable healing.

Check out Ryan Ouellette's work he is one of the best at the aforementioned.
http://www.precisi...m/ryangallery.html
There is also Brian Decker http://purebodyarts.com/portfolio/ (He's a cool dude and nice guy; I hung out with him at the 2010 ROP suspension BBQ [pun not intended])
Much of my work will be done by either Ouellette or Decker as soon as I can afford it. As I know I can trust them.

There are a few more scarification artists in the US that I'm less familiar with are... lets see...
Theres Pere Frost, in Chicago.
Ron Garza in CA http://rongarza.com/Pages/Portfolio.html
John Joyce in NY http://www.scarabb...scarification.html
Kevin Nasser in NY
Steve Truitt in NM

It's a short list but these are some of the Big names in scarification.
