BMW meets Bambi.

zipping along nicely on a northern alberta highway, around 10pm, saw it sitting on the side of the road...stood on the brakes and sure as shit it jumped out catching the BMW on the drivers front corner.

damage:
headlight lens (not broken but shifted the xenon housing)
foglight assembly
bumper cover
hood/grills
front fender

Despite an impact at 140km/hr i didn't even feel it. When nismo said earlier these things are safe, i beleive it. Damage isn't big considering. If there's ever a car i'm in a crash with, this is what I want it to be.

Total estimate, $9000 *bends over
30 hours work to repair + parts
covered by insurance

pictures coming

I used to think hunting was cruel and pointless. I started road tripping with the family in 2004. I wouldnt hesitate to jump on a hunting trip now. Ive never been so scared and stressed out more in my life than trips through Texas and Colorado. Man i would love to blow their heads off now. Stupid animal.

Bumper cover 1600
Headlight assy 1800
Hood 1400
Fencer 350

once adding in the panel clips, covers, trims etc... all parts come to about 6500 bucks labour is 29 hours. Apparently these fuckers are hard to take apart. German Engineering

Thanks Yokes, I am safe. I saw it coming and actually yelled LOUD "ahhhh i'm going to hit it" ......... and i did lol

The piss off part of the whole story is the reason for the trip. A lady that used to work for me owed me about $1000 from a van I sold her and she stopped making payments on. She's a dog breeder so to recover my money, we agreed i'd get two puppies, valued at about $900. So on my way up to pick up the pups, I smoke the deer. So my winfall after insurance deductible amounts to sweet fuck all.

Last time I was in an accident, I had the same second of realization (in my case, it was I was about to be hit from behind by a truck).

I did about $4500 in damage to my Silverado last fall. Fuckers. I don't hunt myself, but I'm all for it. I couldn't imagine if there was no population control at all.

that's it, though... fewer and fewer people are deer hunting because of what a pain in the ass it is (especially in New York State). Last night, we must've seen 20 of them in 20 miles of highway.

It sucks they make it such a hassle to get permits anymore(its not so bad out here but still worse than it should be) no one wants to go through trouble to get one. The area I just moved out of had an (game and parks) estimated 22 deer per square mile I lost a $1800 dollar door on my suburban and started driving my old 76' LTD more I still managed to break out the grill on it but that thing was a deer killing machine. haha

Since moving and trading vehicles I still managed to hit a deer with the new truck before I even got the in-transit stickers off it. When I get the money I'm buying the biggest plate steel bumper I can find and mowing down EVERYTHING that crosses the road in front of me.

Interestingly, this weekend is the 1 year anniversary where I also hit a deer in the Honda Passport; however, I think the car gods planned that one and I ended up with the XJ

Well, what usually happens is they want so many permits issued per year based on deer population. In the past, I've seen years where they've actually just given people extra tags just for asking for them. My uncle is a big hunter when it comes to deer, he and his son usually hunt bow, muzzleloader and rifle seasons, then go to the Southern Tier for pistol season at the very end.

Anyway, not this year, but maybe four or five years ago he was given extra tags because the population was so high. Sadly, he didn't fill one damn tag that year though. I was looking forward to venison steaks with onions.

I hit one in my '89 BMW in a corner, just clipped the little bastard after slamming on my brakes so hard I warped my rotors. That winter I hit one in my '89Tercel going a hell of a lot faster, pretty much finished the car off.

Next, after that, I was doing about 180-190 km/h in the BMW and had a buck jump out in front of me, MIGHT have touched a hair on his tail, definitely ruined my seat.

And finally, hit one in my lifted XJ at 10 in the morning on a sunny summer day doing about 80-90 km/h... the fucker jumped out about 2 feet in front of me, didn't even get a chance to take my foot off the brake. Hit the grille, then went under the Jeep. Hamburger everywhere, Jeep parts everywhere.

I hate deer. Kill them all off. And I don't even like venison.

Unless already in the road, I hit the horn repeatedly at one second toots. They always jump back in the woods. This is on rural backroads at around 40ish mph, limit 30. Probably wouldn't work at highway speeds.

30 years ago I hit a large deer with a big rack in my old '66 VW Bus. The deer died right away. Bus got a large dent in the front, so my toes would hit the front when I stepped on the brakes. The 6 inches of front end was reduced to 3 in that area.

The increased safety of newer vehicles is reassuring.

Say what? I would much rather hit a deer in something old and solid. My 76' Ford LTD killed several deer in its life time and the only thing that ever broke was the plastic grille. Several of the impacts where at 50-60 mph usually it just sucked them under and spit the out the back in varying forms of FUBAR.

I'd much rather have a little crunched sheet metal or broken head lights to deal with. Rather than air bags blowing up in my face and crumple zone pushing sheet metal into the tires I'm trying to use for steering.

Although I do agree with the horn trick it usually does get them to jump back from the road.
