New games always bring new ideas and features that, when successful, become more and more refined through sequels. What are some of those great one-hit-wonders that started off strong but never got to go further?

Here are a couple of games that I think should be continued, from yestergen.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System was a multi-release for the Xbox, Gamecube, and PS2. It's a quirky and intensely fun arcade-style third person shooter, very much akin to the Ratchet & Clank series in gameplay style. All of the game's characters are robots on a robot-inhabited planet, and the game takes that premise in cool directions. For example, Glitch, the main character, can buy upgrades for himself and his weapons, which are kinda like interchangeable limbs (he removes his hands to equip guns and other weapons, whichever way you want). He is also given a control tether device, a hacking tool that lets you re-program your enemies to follow your command.

Sudeki was for the Xbox and later for PC, which I just finished replaying. It's an RPG with very cool ideas and extremely addictive combat, but was too short with a lame and uninspired story.
You get to control four characters at the same time-- two melee and two casters. The combat is part hack and slash, part ranged spellcasting, and all real-time, but it slows down to bullet time when you're picking out which special ability you want to use or searching your packs for an item instead of just freezing time like in other games when you bring up the menu. It sounds like it'd be frustrating, but in reality it makes you think fast and plan ahead.
The character progression is an interesting system as well. You can spend points earned by leveling up in one of four skill categories or on unlocking new abilities, and each character earns points individually, so you're free to spend them on how you'd like each character to specialize, like having one with strong melee attacks, another able to cast lots of powerful spells, or another being able to take more damage.
The sad thing is the game ends too quickly and the story is just filler material, but I really would have liked to see this one go further in a sequel made with a great development team working with these ideas.

I played the heck out of the Time Splitters games, would love a current gen version but it's not gonna happen.

I have been on a couple of message boards, which started out as listservs, for over 15 years discussing a sequel for Wasteland. Fallout 1 & 2 were piss-poor successors, and Brian Fargo has been taunting us for years, occasionally popping into the boards to talk about it. I believe that he re-acquired the IP license a few years ago, but I haven't heard anything in a while. Of course, it would be rather difficult to successfully create a sequel after 23 years with today's expectation of what a game has to be.

I still play it from time to time.

Sheesh, 1988 was a while before my gaming days, but I agree. Achieving a persistent world in a video game back then was very advanced for its time. I'll bet he could work wonders with today's technology. It doesn't have to be a sequel either; call it a "remake" or an "update", and it'll succeed.

I still play this game all the time. It's nothing groundbreaking in terms of shooters, but it had a great story, incredible style, and gameplay that somehow still holds up to modern shooters. Hell, the end was even a cliffhanger. I doubt we'll ever see a sequel, but I'll never stop hoping.

Nice! I never got all the way through it, only rented it, but it had a slick style and those finishers were fun.

Psychonauts.

Freakin', one of my favorite games, ever.

The creator has said he has a general idea in mind for a sequel, just needs a company to take it up.

Ever try this?

there are a few variations of it, some older and newer. just click images for what I gave you there and you'll see what I mean.

I own 13 Dead and Drive and really want to replace it - besides the fact that the board is very shittily made, the game is great.
