Right now I'm taking care of two kittens ( less than 3 weeks ) My friend found them in a bush next to his apartment and rescued them.I love cats, but it's the first time I see cats that small ! One of them is bigger and likes to play around and the other one is smaller and gets affraid easily. So the question is,is there anything beside milk I can give them to eat while they are small to make sure they become healhty adults cats ? Kittens pics will follow if I can get them to not always hide under my furniture. thanks !

You actually don't want to give them cows milk since it can cause diarrhea and badly dehydrate them.

I raised my abandoned kitten (from two weeks old) on a bottle fed mix of KMR (kitten milk replacer) and it worked really well. I transitioned her from that to wet food as soon as she started ignoring the bottle without eating an appropriate amount for a kitten her size. I think she was about a month and a half at that point.. not sure.

Anyway, KMR seems to be the next best thing to mothers milk as far as my considerable amount of research has shown. A word of warning however, DO NOT buy HARTZ kitten milk replacer. That shit is toxic and has been known to kill kittens by gumming them up inside, and cause irreversible intestinal damage.

The company who made the one I used is called Pet AG. Here's a link:

Nope, I originally bought a can the first night we had my kitten. She wouldn't have more then a sip or two when we tried to feed it to her. Some research brought up a whole mess of complaints (and led me to KMR). Also, Hartz flea prevention items have apparently been known to cause chemical burns on animals they're used on. But they still sell them as well. Garbage company, avoid at all costs. Nothing will happen I assume until somebody brings a lawsuit....

Bah.

As for kittens, mine is doing very well now, though I can't say the same for my screens. (Window is closed, we practice safe climbing at the Action residence).

I have never used Hartz products but know of people who have used the flea collars, which resulted in burns around the neck where the collar was.
One product I don't trust at all is Zodiac. I tried the Zodiac flea treatment and ended up having to take my cat to the emerg clinic because he had a serious reaction to it! The veterinarian I talked to told me that there have been numerous cases with the same reaction to the Zodiac flea treament but the products are still being sold in the stores!

Yup, KMR is the best. When I was a kid, my kitty died shortly after giving birth to her 5 kittens so we had to feed them that. They all grew up healthy and happy.

That hartz stuff is nasty. My ex used the flea treatment (the kind you put between the shoulder blades) and our cat started walking funny, then foamed at the mouth. We had to wrestle him into the shower and wash all that gunk off. Thankfully in a few minutes he was ok, but that was a scaaaary experience.

Hartz products, in general, are complete crap. I lost a parakeet when I was a child after feeding it Hartz. When buying another, the woman at the bird shop told us that feeding Hartz is the equivalent to feeding cardboard. I've not bought another Hartz product since then.

One more thing...

Stay the fsck away from Glade air fresheners. If you use it, keep it away from the cat box.

My Sammy had seizures until he got it all out of his system and we stopped using it. It was only a mild exposure, we'd use it in the bathroom after someone took a dump, but it was enough to make him have a seizure.

Awww, that really sucks. I had a cat once that had that - she was only 2 and we had to have her put down. We tried everything, but in the end, she was suffering.

The pics are so cute tho! Good for you for taking them in to care for them... alot of people wouldn't give a f**k and just leave them to fend for themselves.

My heart goes out to you. When I adopted my cats one of them had FIP and I didn't know until Bonnie started getting sick within 3 weeks. She was only with me for three months. The disease processes pretty quickly and it's very hard to watch. You may see signs of jaundice, a really bad cough, not eating but looking like they are gaining weight.

If you want to have the best chances of your other cat not getting sick you actually will need to separate the cats completely. It can be spread through shared litter and food dishes. As hard as that can be I highly suggest you do this. I lost Bonnie, but Clyde is still here three years later, snoring away on my floor as we speak .

Sorry to dig up something old, but it also doesn't work.

This shit and the Sargents crap. You may as well just dab cooking oil behind their ears. I ended up taking two cats to the vet, buying a years supply of Advantage II and flea bombing my entire house three times.

I'm also hearing that Frontline has stopped working in some areas of the country and people are being advised to switch to Advantix for dogs or Advantage II for cats.
