Very often when I see 2 locomotives pulling a train the lead engine will be of course facing forward, while the next engine attached behind is facing the opposite direction, operating in reverse. Why do they do this?

I think its just a coincidence man, it really doesn't matter what direction the locomotive is facing.

A lot of times, engines will be put front to back when a crew needs to do switching. I know a lot of local trains will do this particularly when they have a lot of switching to do or have a long trip. The union and CN had a fight about this a couple of years ago on the Pine Falls sub because they started running only one SD40-2 instead of the usual pair. As a result the running crew were complaining that they were running blind for the return trip to Winnipeg and had to turn around constantly.

I think CG hit it on the spot - for switching cars and wahtnot, it'd suck to be in reverse for several hundred miles.

Interesting...learn something new every day and makes sense. When I was in India they would have rear facing lead units on road trains and they would ride the whole way facing backwards..never understood that.

A more important explanation is so they can run either direction with a "front" leading, rather than running the locomotive backwards. This is especially important when a train is running down a branch line and back, but with no turning facilities on the line. Locomotive A would lead going up the line and when they need to go back they just run around their train and locomotive B would lead, both with the cab facing the direction of travel.

For switching it wouldn't matter as much as locomotives are bidirectional, but there could be visibility issues requiring locos to be facing certain directions.

Keep it fuzzy.
