do you really need a gig of ram for what you're going to be doing? 512mb should be plenty.

A regular case fan. Looking at the holes and all, looks like you can put in an 80mm or 120mm fan. Just take a ruler and check.

That one weirdly enough, looks like a 120mm port.

yeah i would suggest an 120 mm because they are quieter and produce more air flow...

So, for X-mas we are upgrading the box. We have budget of about $650 maybe more maybe less.

my current box is:

CPU: Intel 2.8 gigahertz
Memory: Kingston 512MB (2x 356)
HDD #1: IDE WD 160GB
HDD #2: IDE WD 200GB
Mobo: Abit IC7-G
Video: Nvidia Geforce FX 5200
Sound: some shitty Turtle beach card (it self deletes its drivers every five hours)
NIC: 10/100/1000

I want to upgrade it so it has at least 1 GB of dual channel ram with room to expand, An AMD Processor, and a PCI-Express compatible motherboard. Problem is, AMD to Intel is like how linux was to windows a few months ago to me. Now before you tell me to run off and justfuckinggoogleit, I have, but I all could find was about how great AMD was compared to intel and so on, and so on. What I need to know is what is compatible with what and what is best for me. I am basically looking to replace most of my box, HDD, sound, video, ram, processor, ram, case. For my HDD, I don't need anything huge, just something decent and reliable. Sound needs to be decent, video needs to be able to cope with most games, Ram needs to be 1 GB or more, processor decent as well.

Here's what I have come up with, If you have any suggestions, if you notice any problems with my selection, or if a am missing something, please feel free to tell me.

motherboard

processor

ram

hard drive

case

video

sound

EDIT: Added in suggestions

Erm if you really don't need SLI, this is a very good non-SLI 939 board:

http://www.newegg....em=N82E16813136152

If you really do need SLI, either stick with the one you chose or go with DFI's SLI version of the board I linked.

CPU is good, though you might want to go for the 3700+ San Diego.

That RAM is rather weak but it'll do in a pinch.

I'd go with a 7800GT if you can swing the higher price, if its gotta be budget go for the good old 6600GT.

For sound, go for the Soundblaster X-Fi Xtrememusic one or whatever its called (the cheapest one, though its still very good).

I'm going to go with the SLI board, just for future purposes.

mmm, yeah, that san diego looks good.

I plan on upgrading the ram when I get some extra cash.

can't afford the 7800GT, but I sure will go with the 6600 GT.

Sound card looks good too.

I'm not ordering yet as I want to let others voice their opinion and I need to pull my cash out of the bank. Thanks for the advice.

ordered!

I have to order in two parts since the credit card I happen to be using couldn't hold the whole order. So I am going to use some parts from the old box until next month when I get the rest.

so far I have:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
RAM: CORSAIR 1GB Dual Channel Memory
Motherboard: ABIT AN8 SLI
Case: Black Aspire X-Cruise
Video card: Geforce 6600GT

Good choices all around. You should be very happy with that setup.

6600gt's might be a lower level card, but I like them very much. Ive had this set up for almost a year, and i must say it is a very good computer that does its needs. I need more RAM but RAM is going down in price so thats good.

2x6600gt
3200+ Winchester core
512 RAm
