Downtown Bowmanville Chinese restaurant burns
One person taken to hospital

CLARINGTON -- One person has been brought to hospital following a fire that broke out around noon on Monday, Aug. 29 at Double Dragon Delights restaurant on Hwy. 2 in Bowmanville.

“It was brought to our attention that somebody did go to the hospital,” Clarington Fire Chief Gord Weir said. “It was a patron, and Durham Regional Police are looking after that for us. All I know is it might have been a little bit of smoke inhalation.” Thirty firefighters from all five of Clarington’s fire stations are currently in their fourth hour of fighting the fire.
“We’re going to be there for a number of hours yet,” Chief Weir said at 3:30 p.m. “There’s probably still burning going on, because the roof’s collapsed, so we’ve got equipment there now trying to pull some of the walls apart to help us get that out.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed.

“My prevention staff right now are interviewing the owner,” Chief Weir said. “I don’t believe it’s anything suspicious. I think we have a handle on what may have caused it, but until he’s finished his interviews, I don’t want to say.”
A damage estimate has yet to be determined, but will be “substantial” Chief Weir said.

Fighting the fire has been tricky, he added.

“It was just really getting at it,” he said of the difficulty the fire presented. “It appeared to start in the roof and got into the attic space and travelled quite quickly. We didn’t want to endanger any firefighters lives, so we pretty well fought it either from the roof, or from the outside, but most of the roof has collapsed inside.”

The fire was contained to the building, which also houses a driver education centre in the basement. Everyone from the downstairs business was evacuated safely.

Adjacent businesses were evacuated, and heavy, black smoke could be seen throughout downtown Bowmanville. Chief Weir said the smoke has mostly dissipated now.

Bowmanville hasn’t seen a fire of this magnitude since the blaze that destroyed Lange’s Photo Lab downtown several years ago, he added.

As his business burned, the restaurant's owner had no choice but to stand there in shock and watch as fire crews battled the blaze.

“Oh my God,” whispered Steven Ng, owner of Double Dragon Delights, over and over.

The restaurant is located at the entrance to the downtown area at 109 King St. W. and the building is also home to Peter’s Academy of Defensive Driving.
Mr. Ng said the fire started after noon, about 12:15 p.m., and originated in the deep fryer as an employee was cooking beef. “He tried to stop it first and couldn’t,” said Mr. Ng of the employee.

All in all, Mr. Ng and two employees from the restaurant and four people from the driving school evacuated the building. No one was hurt.

“We were just downstairs and a student just came downstairs and said there was a fire,” said Audrey Dixon, an instructor at the driving school. “I thought it was across the street ... we ran upstairs and saw the roof was on fire.”

Ms. Dixon said most of the students had gone for lunch at the time of the incident and she was there with two parents and just one student.

“We didn’t hear any alarm or anything; we could have been burned,” she said.
Firefighters used the aerial truck to battle the flames, which could be seen flaring up in the roof area. As they worked to stop the fire, part of the roof collapsed.

The black smoke from the fire could be seen from Hwy. 401 and access to a portion of the downtown was cordoned off by Durham police. There was also an apartment in the building, but Mr. Ng said no one lives there; instead, staff use it to rest.

My coworker who lives in Bowmanville told me about this! She and her boyfriend were bored one day this week and wanted to go for lunch at the restaurant behind it but the streets were all closed off and they couldn't go! My sister and I drove by that night and saw the remains. Crazy!

We're all mad here...
