They do that in Sudbury, too. If you've ever owned a car that's lived in Sudbury for a few years, it's a whole different kind of rust- I had a Tercel you could literally snap the body panels off of. There was no bubbling or anything, and the metal under the paint was smooth, but brown and brittle as hell.

Yeah, my grandfather actually working in developing ways of applying coatings to various objects was completely amazed at how smooth the brown brittle metal on his floor pan was that he actually went up to the old Republic Steel plant that created the tailings that Samurai talks about and found out whats in the tailings....turns out its at that plant in particular, they had lots of impure ore more than other plants!

My grandfather had a coworker at GE who believe it or not, would commute from Moriah to GE R&D on River Road in Schenectady and had this issue where those tailings would accelerate the rust decay on the floor pan of his '63 Impala. My grandfather could not believe it!

ask him if his name was O'Neil.

anyways, if you look at this stuff, it looks like sandblasting medium. In fact, my dad has used it to sandblast shit for welding. Cars here are beat to fuck after a few years. If you go out near Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and beyond, the sand and lack of a car wash out there is evident. Relatively new cars are have the paint just sandblasted right off.
