So on my way to work last night I get run off the road by a guy driving at a very high rate of speed. I was going 70 mph and he went by me like I was standing still. All over the road and coming close to hitting the guardrails on either side of the 4 lanes of highway before I lost site of him.

A few miles up the road I come upon a crash that had just occurred. Yup it was that car. I stopped to see if anyone was hurt since I was pretty sure that he was drunk or having some sort of medical issue based on how I saw him drive after he pushed me off the road. How he managed to not involve anyone else in that crash is beyond me. He proceeded to walk away from the car after asking another driver that stopped for a ride. We lost sight of him after he walked up the ramp. There was a strong smell of alcohol and empty beer cans in the car.

The cops arrived and we told the direction he went and a description and gave them our phone numbers. Shortly after I get to work I get the call that they have located a man who fits the bill and they need me to identify him to make the arrest. I tell my immediate report, make sure there is enough coverage for my machine and go back to the scene. It was him, I go to the station and sign the depo. He is a repeat DWI offender.

This morning my boss asks me about it. He told me to fill out my time sheet as unexcused time no vacation pay granted AND he will get back to me on his decision regarding a write up. Really a write up?????? Great I am only one of 2 people who stopped that could identify this ass. Ok so they do not allow me vacation time I have earned for the time I lost so be it, but to write me up for getting a dangerous driver off the road?

I know here in cali there are laws against employers pulling that shit, you might want to check your states labor laws...

If you have the wording or a reference for that law in CA that would be great. I was having trouble finding anything in NY. All of my searching comes back to things like jury duty and work related accidents.

I am not going to pursue this but I would love to add the reference to the bottom of my write up.

I am just fucking pissed. The boss is a born again bible thumper. I am sure that if he was run off the road while driving his family home from church, work would have been the least of his concerns. Betting he would have done the same thing I did. BTW last week another employee asked to leave to get the keys out of the car his wife had locked in. Not only did he get permission he was told not to worry about the time sheet. It is about an hour round trip plus the time it took to get the car unlocked. He gets paid for that and I get threatened with a write up and denied use of vacation.

Go above his head or contact the HR dept. If they won't help (or your company doesn't have one) then inform him/them that you have no problem with taking this to the media (ie - your local "news on your side", etc.) and/or the labor board.

I am not looking to fight the write up because this place makes the rules as they go along. Since we are not a union shop and they state in writing that issues regarding attendance are taken on a case by case basis it won't do me any good.

The last write up I got was for being 3 minutes late to my press.(2 years ago) I added to the bottom of the thing when I signed that I had received it that all the clocks in the plant are different by as much as 10 min. I was later told by another supervisor that I got that because they were writing up another person who has a tardy problem and because I was behind them in the walkway they had to write me up also. WTF! I was late coming around the corner because I was stopped to be briefed by the outgoing operator that had left the press early.

I am a good employee, granted there are always better but they should have no complaints since there are far worse than me there. Keeping my mouth shut and flying low under the radar is a good thing there. Since I am very opinionated I have to pick battles carefully, I am not known for low flying.

I decided to sound off here and get it out of my system before I go back to work. Walls talk in that place. As crazy as it sounds there are quite a few people here that can make you think enough to put things into perspective. I am looking for another job but it is hard to find one in this area that pays that well so it is worth putting up with all the crap and they know it. Sooo I will take the write up and hopefully if I get let go for something stupid the write ups will be proof enough of the type of business they run I can use them in case they decide to fight my unemployment claim.

Actively looking for another job.

It just gets better. We had a dinner for 500 days no injuries. Management was there. A coworker gets a call after the dinner to say that they forgot to give her her 10 year award and it was left on the bench in the locker/bathroom. They could leave it and make the call but not walk it out to her OMG. The next morning she gets called to the office. She was in the hospital a few days before Not sure what for but she was admitted so it had to be serious enough. She has had some health problems this year, all documented so she has used her sick time (3 1/2 days) in 10 1/2 months. They could meet face to face to tell her she is getting 2 days suspension w/o pay for being in the hospital but not to give her 10 year award. Now she will be a total of 62 hrs. short in pay this month. Way to treat a good 10 year employee.
