lol I don't post baseless statistics. I post wikipedia-based statistics. "The hobby is most popular with white males who make up approximately 85% of explorers.[5]"

I'd still like to know how they got that data.

You'd have to consider that there are many UE websites, and many people out there who UE and do not post about it online.

Then you have to take into account the fact that a goodly portion of the people will put themself as "trans" or "both" and they aren't, or will put themself as "female" and aren't, or "male" and aren't.

The notoriety of the urbexor to fiendishly lie online about their gender coupled with the fact that it is difficult to track them all down...

Makes me look at your 'statistic' and go PFFFFFTTTT!!!! Cuz I think it's a total load of crap.

It's one of those percentages, when you're talking to someone, and you pull it out of thin air, to support what you're trying to say. 85% eh? my, what a lovely nice and defined number!!!

Hey guys! I'm new here (hence the introduction on this thread). Living in the North Kentucky region, looking to get into urban exploring. I'm a preacher by profession, and whenever I do some [deeply amateurish] UE, it is a tremendous stress reliever.

Got any tips or suggestions? How can I get more into/out of this?

How can I meet up with people? (I'm sure there's a post about this, but I haven't found it yet). I really want some more experienced urban explorers to mentor me and show me the loop.

Cheers!

Holy Hanna, a fellow NKY'r! Welcome, sir!

Best advice I can give has probably been said a thousand times... there's a lot of good information on gear, safety, etc, all over this forum. If you're looking for locations, like Therrin said, just bugging people for information will not make you any friends. Get to know people, participate, basically let us know that you're who you say you are. Don't ask me for tips on this one, because I'm still figuring it out myself. In the meantime, Google is your friend, especially Google Maps. There are abandonments and interesting sights all over NKY and Cincinnati; start with your neighborhood and pan out. As for meeting with other people, well, the same advice. Get to know people, and check out the Events section: http://www.uer.ca/events/

Good luck, sir! Or Mam, it's hard to tell on the internet. :p

It seems to be about 65 to 70% men and the rest women on this site although the white statement for the most part is quite true hardly anyone on this site that I have seen that isn't white.

It seems there are continuously more women.
I think if someone's footnoted on Wiki, they should provide their data colleciton and how they figured it.

Otherwise I could claim any given number, and someone could footnote me, and that's that. Just cuz someone's footnoted just means you're quoting what they said, it DOESN'T mean that they know crap.

I'm not commenting on the race part.

For the other part, show people what you bring to the table, as an equal. If you run around begging, they'll treat you the same way they treat the people in the parking lot at Walmart who approach you begging for "change for gas".

Hello everyone, i'm Van from northwest Atlanta, GA.

Contractor by trade in love with buildings old and new, just decided it was time to do something outside of working with them for a change. I haven't ever actually gone exploring in the sense that most people here have, all of my journeys lead me into places being built(which is getting a bit dull)

Hi, I live in Riga, Latvia, but am currently visiting Anchorage, Alaska, and will also be going to Chicago for a few days before heading home. I am not new to UE, but I usually avoid exciting adventures - I am mostly in it for the calm mood of solitary places, ghosts of people and things long elsewhere and the excellent photo opportunities. Found this forum while searching online for some locations to visit while I'm away from my usual hunting grounds. Tourism, you see.
Part of the reason why I'm posting is to ask -what is the reason behind not letting a new user post for three days? Am I supposed to read the entire publically available forum before posting? That wouldn't take three days anyway.
edit: Nevermind, found the answer in one of the twenty faq's floating around. Not that it's any less unpleasant now that I know it's not just a silly mistake. Time constraints and things.

Hi, my name is Byron

I currently go to school at UCLA and have a passion for adventure. I've been through the steam tunnels, multiple rooftops, construction zones/cranes, abandoned buildings, and drawbridge ghost town. I am always down to explore and find new places as well as share locations to those that appreciate these kind of places. Hope to meet many of you in future UE outings!

So I'm kinda new. I made an account three years ago when I started exploring with friends in the east coast of the US. We did a good mix of drains, tunnels, abandoned buildings, and not-so-abandoned buildings. Rooftops and steam tunnels were my favorites.

So now I'm on the west coast, bay area (california, usa). Feel free to message me if you're nearby. I'm trying to meet new people out here. Doubly so new fellow explorers. Having a go at being active on these forums should help.

I'm also very interested in photography, though I'm not that great at it. I'm learning, and trying to get better. I'm particularly interested in computational photography, but you don't see a lot of that here.

Ping me if you want to chat

Hello, UER, I'm Kat.
I live in Wisconsin. We have a whole lot of rural exploration to do, but not a whole ton of urban. At least the city I live in, things get cleaned up or completely torn down fairly quickly.. so we look to the rural areas for our adventures.

I do my exploring with my sister and a mutual good friend of ours. We're still new to it (about 5 years), very casual and still learning a lot. I look forward to learning from you!

Introducing Cpt. Trigger to the gang =D I'm 21, and live in the beautiful San Bernardino National Forest here in Crestline, California one of the oldest inhabited mountains of california so I'm always finding places to explore up here!!

From the Prohibition tunnels from Top Town to the clubs in Lake Arrowhead to the miles of underground tunnels that release Lake Arrowhead and the secret elevator to the facility at the bottom of the lake *Soon to be explored more.

I'll be sharing those and more shortly, but more about myself. I am fairly normal in the sense that I have two arms, legs and hands to climb beyond that I love doing and going the places we're not suppose to =D From abandoned air fields, to hopping moving freight trains to Ventura or the desert and capturing the old rusting history that so many people hustled and worked and built decades ago that now sit to be rediscovered and loved through my camera. So grab your lamps, boots, gloves, and camelbacks msg me and I'll show you Southern California!!

Hey everyone! I'm Chris and I currently live in Redwood City, CA just south of san fran. I joined the forum when i moved here about a year and a half ago since i was bored and didn't really know anyone (and there's a lot of abandoned shit here!). However, since that point i've been so busy with work and travel that i haven't had time to do any urbex. well now i have time

i got out of the navy last february where i was a nuclear electrician on the uss rhode island (SSBN 740) and took a job with one of the local tech companies. i love to travel and take pictures and nothing is better than exploring some abandoned buildings when i have my camera (+1 if it's in a foreign country, too!).

i shoot with a 6D and just picked up the 14mm canon lens to grab some of those good interior shots. hope to meet up with some of you soon and go explore around here!

Hey I'm Caroline!
I live in Atlanta and have been wanting to get into UE for a while. I'm still a student, so I'm lucky enough to have a relatively open schedule as well as teenage friends that are happy to trespass and take cool pictures with me. I've been studying photography at school for about two years now, so this is a really cool way for me to use that. Also, just went on my first meet up with a few people from Atlanta, and I'd still love to make more connections.

I've been lurking here for awhile and I really enjoy everyone's insights, information, and experiences that they care to share. I consider myself a photographer first (though I am by no means experienced or remotely professional) and an explorer second, though my first passion is engineering. I've definitely been getting more into the exploring side and the history of the places I find intrigues the hell out of me.

I prefer rural to urban exploration simply because it's what I grew up with and I don't live in a big enough city to actually experience urban decay. I'm quite partial to the UP and enjoy getting out in nature in general. I never leave home without my camera so people probably think I've gotten a backpack grafted onto my back. Wisconsin is a great place to be for what I do, and I love it.

I'm glad this forum exists and I hope to continue learning from it and getting to know some of you. And this intro probably sounds way too stiff and serious. So it goes.

I was curious about this as well, and it seems the guy actually wrote a 300+ page Ph.D thesis on urban exploration and the people who do it. His Ph.D is in cultural geography so that makes a lot of sense. I haven't been able to find the full PDF online yet (it's on Scribd but you have to buy it or something), but it's called "Place Hacking: Tales of Urban Exploration" and I think he is an explorer himself from what I gathered.

That does nothing to impress me on gender statistics though.

As I previously mentioned, even if gender is taken via what is listed on web boards and forums, a goodly amount of that is likely skewed (the way it is on here).

Further, no one I know has ever mentioned being contacted by anyone doing a paper on such, who was interested in obtaining gender statistics.

Soooo, one would imagine that it's yes, mostly guys; but in reality who really knows how many females???
85% sounds like a good number, off the top of my head, I think I'll write that!!

Hey guys, my name is Dustin and I figured I'd introduce myself even though no one actually reads this shit. I'm 18 years old from NEPA, about an hour east of Scranton on the NJ border, if you know the area. I've been urbexing for a while now without even realizing that it was a legitimate hobby, of course until I stumbled onto UER. I also like to read, write, lift weights, swim, and shoot guns. And I have a thing for flashlights, which comes in really handy in often pitch-black abandonments. Well that's about it. I might post a thread with some pictures of past explorations soon.
