The 1959 Miller Meteor conversions are classics....

I want a 4x4 Diesel ambulance myself...but that limits myself to a vintage Ford E-series van...

If I was closer, I would so get it. The starter on on the E350 is pretty easy, Rough Idle? I think it might be the vacuum lines but I would have to look at what codes it throwing.

I want one for a rally service vehicle with their full stainless interior, little storage compartments everywhere, monster inverters and lots of diesel hauling power.

Yeah...I want to go diesel for sure, but I'm not thrilled with the Ford diesel offerings available on the used market. I want to a Cummins 4BT but from what I have read, it might be easier to go find a Dodge Ram Chassis and swap an ambulance box onto it than trying to put a Cummins into a Ford!

I ride around with the AMR RAT team in their 4x4 TramaHawk ambulance for every rally which we go on EVERY stage with sweeps. AMR has the F450 cab on them, which is interesting because you need a good driver to actually get good performance. We have Bob who drives that thing almost like its a rally car on the stages and its amazing....and he never puts it in 4WD!

What I want to do with the box interior is make it a mix of things. I do SAR work as some of you know and I want to keep the bench so if needed, I can haul the ground pounders out from the field back to base. So I will put in a murphy bed for my sleeping needs. The little desk area by the attendants chair I'll keep, but I will probably put in a small sink and use one of the exterior compartments as a small freshwater tank and a grey water tank. I'll have an old school Coleman portable toilet.

Ford doesn't actually make their own diesel. It's an International engine with Ford decals on it. (My friends' dad was the head bus mechanic for the local school and was telling us about it)

that's kind of the good thing about the International engine... they're everywhere. Honestly, they don't make as much power as the GM Durachoke, but they also don't blow up ever time you blink either.

Still, the big dog of the light diesel truck world is the Cummins.

X2. Cummins knows how to do light duty diesel well.

Yeah, maintenance is kind of a pain, but we really haven't had any major issues that require full blown shop work yet....but we have an agreement with a few shops to do work on them if needed.

One of the major Ambulance builders, American Emergency Vehicles, they after the whole thing where Ford basically was planning to offer only a gas engine for the builders and of course later changed their mind instead going with a phaseout of the E-series by 2012, they decided to offer a Dodge Ram 3500 cab with the Cummins 6BT diesel on any of their box units. They also have a GM option as well with a diesel. I know the Ram-based box units are actually selling pretty good!

Ford I hear apparently is working on some offering for the ambulance builders...word has it will be on the Transit body, which will be interesting.
