	So, I have never been able to get one of these engines to run properly. The one in my vanagon smokes and has no power, now the Rabbit I am considering trading a bug for used to run great, then it jumped time, got retimed/new belt etc, then started to have issues starting warm then sat for awhile then refused to start without being pulled by another vehicle. Well, I pull started it today after exhausting every option to get it started normally. Checked glow plugs, relay, fuse etc, All that checked out, checked timing reset timing changed injectors....Still wouldn't start, so pull started. It smokes more out the breather than it does out the exhaust.....bah!

	I know nothing about diesels, but the one time I had one that was being a bitch to start was because of the injection timing...

	It's probably either a weak injection pump or pump timing (which, in theory shouldn't have changed). Is it drawing fuel? How's the water separator? Also do a compression test, when my '86 Jetta diesel hit 800,000 it did NOT like to start.

	Compression test told the whole story. ~200psi on all cylinders. minimum "acceptable" number should be close to 400....poor lil guy. I also pulled the head and found a fair amount of scoring on the cylinder walls. So....I'm thinking 1.6 TD time =P
