Wreck the Dress

Sooo… my daughter tells me she wants to do a “wreck the dress” photo shoot. I’m not a photographer, she’s not a model, the camera is a PnC, & I don’t own Photoshop.

Being the good father I am, I acquiesce, and we both brave the cold (well, she gave up before I did – could have something to do with me wearing long johns & her being in stilettos & a dress).

Now she wants to do this again… and again. I realize we won’t be selling these, but I want to give her the best results I can.

As we began to rush when she got cold, some of these were underexposed, I know. But, if you guys wouldn’t mind giving your 2 cents, I’d appreciate any advice!

Also wondering – the choice between BnW and color, is it purely subjective - “I like ‘A’ over ‘B’”, I’m going for an ‘era’ thing, or are there other objective considerations?

Thanks in advance.

There's some good potential here. Not enough wrecking dresses, though. Try immersion in a (heated if you can manage it) swimming pool, for one.

I find B&W to work well for photos with contrast. If there is contrast that highlights the subject, great! If not, if the photo relies on color to show the form of the subject, avoid B&W.

These are pretty photos, and your daughter is cute. Flip through some of the model threads here and find poses you and she like - look for arms and legs showing action, and lines showing character. One of the main reasons (besides boobs) for nude model work is that the lines of the body are revealed better without clothing. Flowing dresses and long-ish hair would work well for your spawn, so think of classy poses that show her off in a good light.

Urban model in a dress gives some examples. Think about where arms, legs, shoulders, and hands are. Consider expression, eyes, and framing. Talk to her about it, and go from there.

Agreed, not the best time of year to start this type of shoot. The romanticism was lost after the first 5 min into it. But, I was warm so guess I can’t pick on her.

Agreed again, my “spawn” will be working with “long” flowing dresses

Thanks for all the feedback! I looked at your link and a few others.
I do have a tendency to get in a rush and forget my lighting options, and in this case, snow falling on the camera had me rushing even more… add umbrella to the equipment list.

No problem man! I enjoy editing other people's photos actually... just have to avoid the people that get offended by that sort of thing haha. By the way, judging from your profile pic we have the same ride, same color too #jeepwave
