You remember my friend's beater truck that I was talking about in another thread on this board ?

I gave him a call, telling him he's in trouble.

Turns out he told me that there's a loophole. If your car is more than 20 years old (as it is the case with his truck), then you can register your vehicle as "historical" and don't have to get it inspected.

the transport minister was on Aaron rand this evening, the law will apply to rural people as well they are also going to smog check cars over 20 years with different criteria. He said "historic" cars, meaning pre obd II will have a more expensive inspection based purely on tailpipe emissions and referenced to a government scale as to what was acceptable for year of manufacture.

not really more of a tax problem... although quebec is the place where removing a catalyst is somthing everyone does. A good mechanic will even cancel the second O2 sensor so the computer dont freak out

Interesting. Portland had a legit smog problem in the 1980s which lead to vehicles in the metro area to do emissions testing. The Oregon test is pretty fair, it keeps the owner honest and it's only 20.00 for a pass and you can renew your plates at the testing center at the same time.

We've had it in Ontario for 10ish years- the diesel test is a scam, they charge you $45 to stare at your tailpipe for 20 seconds.

The gas one is a dyno test at 40 km/h... (unless your car is AWD) but I have a "guy" for my fun cars I've owned that won't pass.

There's no OBD connection on the Ontario E-Test- just a dyno, an RPM pickup (either a butterfly shaped antenna for cars without plug wires, or an inductive clamp), and a tailpipe probe.

not New York... 95+ must be hooked to Der Empire States' VEHICULAR DATABASE!!! ACHTUNG! In fact, when I had the Beretta inspected, a warning lit up on the screen "EXCESSIVE MILEAGE!!! EXCESSIVE MILEAGE!!!" because in a year, i had put 25-30k miles on it. Its just a matter of time before tailpipe sniffers will be here.

Oregon does tailpipe sniffers IF your vehicle is OBDI. If your rig is even pre OBD I, they do the dynamo unless your car is before 1975. If you are ODBII, they plug it in and just read off the data from your O2 sensor and your done in 5 minutes.

Like I said, I have no problem with vehicle emissions testing if its for legit smog problems which there is. Oregon started vehicle testing about the time I first moved to Oregon in 1995 and boy there was a big smog problem in the summer. Since then, I can now see the mountains in the summer during the day.

and Samauri, when 'Dukes took the old Impalas in for inspection, it used to say the same thing for his 50K a year.

Just wondering, can people fake the data sent by the o2 sensor ?

i.e: is it possible to cheat the smog test without "knowing a guy" ?

there are spoofer boxen out there that will alter the reading of a non existant second sensor to spoof the computer into thinking there is a cat on the car.

I am a strong believer in just fixing the car in the first place.

With that said, if you know what type of input the computer is expecting (voltage, resistance, etc) you can most likely manipulate that input with something simple as a resistor at least.

One of my co-workers (I work in New York) couldn't get his car inspected because his check engine light was on. Being from PA, this made me lol...

Here in PA, only populated counties have emissions, and even then I think its a bullshit test.
