Should I use it? Clone stamping for hours isnt really fun, but I dont want to affect sharpness or whatever.

I use it on all of my (color) scans and they look fine to me. Whatever little you lose in sharpness is worth the amount of time it saves you from clone stamping dust.

Digital ice takes an extra four minutes on my scanner and I don't really spend more that four minutes cloning anyways. Although, there are sometimes little fibers in places that are really hard to fix so in that case I would rescan an use the ice.

Yea I always just call healing brush clone stamp for whatever reason.. and yes I got the 4490. How the HELL do you get it to stop autotrimming? I've tried everything it seems like, I just want it to scan both frames and I can do the trimming!

If you are using Epson scan I think you might have to uncheck the create thumbnails box. I could be wrong though. I don't have epson scan anymore I just use the crappy stock software on my computer.

Use it on colour, but don't use it on B&W.

Polaroid released a dust&scratch removal app 8 or 9 years ago that still works marvelously. It chokes sometimes on large TIFF files so I wouldn't use it for originals- it works best at the end of the workflow to clean up JPEGs for internards or print. It was free from Polaroid and ought to be floating around somewhere still.

My two cents: don't use it.

Use a dust blower and if you have CS5 use the new content aware fill feature , it works great on the small dust particles!

I'll second this. I used it at first, but found I actually lost details on the images.

Why is it worse to use it on B&W negs?

It simply doesn't work with B&W (true B&W, not C-41 B&W).
