I think they were on the right track with 3rd edition, but I think they should have done it like Avalon Hill did with the Advanced Squad Leader game. The rulebook was loose-leaf, so that when changes to the rules came out, you could replace superceded pages. They should have done that with D&D, and then with spells and monsters did something along the lines of the old monstrous Compendium, where a page (or more as needed) was devoted to each monster. Probably don't need a whole page for spells, though...
And why the hell aren't the D&D books available for e-readers?
