one of the poopervisors at work has a 2001 BMW 325 with 153,000 miles on it. About a week ago, he was in my department and we were talking about cars (He has a 2002 Firebird Trans Am) and I asked him how many miles he had on his Beemer. He said about 150k. I think it was Bandi that was talking about how Beemers should have their timing sets done at 80k or bad things happen under the hood. I passed this along and the conversation was forgotten...

Until yesterday...

On his way to work, George said he looked up in the mirror and there was blue-white smoke billowing out the back of the car. The engine hitched once, but kept going, but felt like it had no balls. He pulled into a little lot and no sooner he went to Park, the engine summarily clunked to a stall. He tried to restart it, but he said it sound like the starter was trying to spin over a siezed engine.

Opinions on what could be wrong with Jorge's Beemer Bummer?

Blown head gasket or cracked head. The cooling systems are pretty fragile in those cars.

A dear friend of mine owns nothing but those, but much newer...and he concurs. Considering he had a 2000 BMW M5 until a few years ago when it became extremely expensive...like over $1K for a transmission repair/replacement.

The principle of the K-car is quite simple:

Cheap to own
Cheap to drive
Cheap to Repair
Cheap to have fun

I don't think any BMW can match that.

I've NEVER heard of a domestic tranny being that expensive.

the GTS was a ball to drive with the 2.5L Turbo and the High-Capacity 5speed. Also it WAS comfortable and as for holding value, well, that's always the foreign fallback.
but it's you and it's like arguing with a retarded child.

and yes, I am old enough to have driven these cars when new.

One day, for a fun summer toy, I would like a Plymouth Reliant.

Oh wait...

So ummmm... how many LeBaron GTSs of that vintage are still around? Because E28 BMWs are still everywhere.

I've seen GTSs around Portland...a matter of fact, I've seen them by the BMW Shop that runs the BMW Club of Portland
