Perhaps common knowledge but a useful method for CYA

A few times now ive been caught exploring. Sometimes its as simple as playing the freelance photographer card , others playing up the maintenance or environmental assessment guy. Ive read a couple read suggestions (read: cigarettes) for getting out of a jam. A tactic thats worked a couple times for me in the past has been the offer to 1. keep silent about the place and any POE 2. offer a little community service. No lie, once had a property owner hell bent on seeing me arrested; called the cops, I passed on the opportunity to run (a good idea in hindsight as the path out would have surely come at the cost of some of my gear) and sure enough the police showed up. After the usual exchanges, I felt tensions eased with the property owner, and the officer was on the fence. I took the opportunity to offer up an exchange; community service and silence, for my ease of passing unscathed. Thankfully both seemed open to the idea, and I spent quite some time with the property owner regarding the areas history after the police left. I felt the deal was fair, I gained some knowledge, which may have ironically revealed more sites, and I didn't get a ticket or arrested. Besides a couple hours helping out in your own community isn't actually all that bad; that said I lucked out and ended up having to paint a wall that had been tagged (the ugly tags, one line one colour; technically nothing on paper re:trespassing etc , officer agreed that if I showed up to "volunteer" some time of my own free will, nothing would come of the situation.

tl;dr = offer to do community service in exchange for being arrested/ticketed
***only a suggestion, by no means a guarantee. if you did something to be arrested for there is a chance itll get you off with just a ticket but odds are if you're boned you're boned take this as a tactic, not a safety net

/longwinded story

I am very glad this worked out for you.

Time and time again, I've stated that the "secret" which usually works to keep explorers out of trouble is to clearly demonstrate a legitimate interest and be readily distinguishable from vandals and thieves.

The fact that you were willing to "volunteer" and your interest in the property's history clearly showed your intentions.
