| | | If it's your first time free climbing, bring a friend. There is no debate on it, if it's your first free climb, bring someone who you know will take care of you if you happen to fuck up. Don't climb alone until you are very confident of your skills.

It's blindingly obvious that YOU don't know how to use a harness or properly rig anchor points, but what does that have to do with anyone else???? Using super simple skills to place anchor points doesn't give you the "illusion" of safety, it gives you safety. The only people who waste huge amounts of time and energy in a harness are the ONES WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY'RE DOING. And while you touch on the fact that not knowing how to do something properly makes it pretty useless, you totally leave out that becoming educated in doing something correctly is the best route to take by far. If you feel like you need a harness for ANYTHING... just learn how to do it the right way, then go do it. Don't listen to stupid "advice" not to do something if you think you need a harness for it.
Following that "advice" will limit you to only things which can be done without a harness, and will seclude you from all of the further activities which can ONLY be done with a harness. The ability to do vertical access and learning the associated techniques will open up your options exponentially. It will allow you to access areas that those who can only climb ladders are not able to get to; and they'll be watching with chagrin on their faces as you scale far past them into amazing places.
Purposeful ignorance is NEVER a better replacement for learning more about something. It's obvious that you've got a chip on your shoulder about OSHA, but what the FUCK does that have to do with Urban Exploration???

You want to use anchor points on a caged ladder? How pathetic is that? You neglected to address hanging trauma and the very real possibility of serious injuring yourself even with a safety harness. Even five feet of a uncontrolled fall on steel will bust you up bad. Instead of feeling safe, be safe. The more gear, the more to distract you, and to fail. Look and feel the structure as you climb, concentrate of not fucking up. 3 points of contact at all times. This is some of the safest "free climbing" the planet has to offer.
A caged ladder is hardly free climbing except the first 10-25 feet if you need to get around security on the cage or otherwise get high enough to get inside it, and then the ladder to the roof of the tank is normally not caged. Just don't go when it's wet, go alone, and take your time. It will be fun. [last edit 4/12/2012 12:26 AM by MrSivalls - edited 1 times]

I will not be alone. I tend to get the guts to do certain things and am more comfortable when I'm with someone, Otherwise my mind is bouncing all over.

Yeah, having friends makes you more comfortable doing things for the first time, it's a big weight off your shoulders. Isn't it?

...wtf ?? I'm with Therrin on this one. A properly fitted harness with lobster claws is an essential piece of safety gear when climbing an uncaged ladder up any great distance. It doesnt slow you down and can save your life. Obviously you try and avoid falling, even with a harness...that should go without saying.
|
The roof is on a flight hangar, there is nothing you can connect it to. I only was asked to wear one when going up there. By the way the climbing up there includes climbing over the air ducts of the AC, there is no point you can connect it to. On a radio tower, it's a different story. There you should be connected to something at all times.

Really, what are they going to do? If you or they fall (or more likely drop something), who's ever below the will get a nasty surprise. Rust and scale gets in your eyes if someone's climbing above you. So make sure to stay on top of things. Chatter can travel a long way, and you're easy to spot when climbing. Don't dime yourself out.

That's all common sense.. I just feel more comfortable knowing even if I do get caught or something, or something goes wrong, I'm not completely alone and at least in the end have someone to tell the story with.

People aren't tools dude, or just someone to chat with. Having someone around can help give you a little extra confidence in doing something you have the ability to do, but not necessarily the balls. They can call you out when you're being too much of an idiot, or offer encouragement when you need it.

Well said. That's what I was pretty much thinking but couldn't find the words. Having someone around is comforting. How many shows have you watched where someone is praising their best friend for getting them out of a tough situation? Not scripted shows, real life stories.

Chatter and distraction is the last things you need. Two people on a ladder need to be spaced by at least ten feet. Getting shit in your eyes or something smashed into your head or shoulder will not help your cause. Learn to rely on yourself, that is real confidence that can save your life.
