What is the difference between exploring and being lost?"

Have you noticed yourself scanning more < on 4/15/2012 2:45 AM >
Scanning the roadside for exploring opportunities? I do it all the time, whether or not I am driving or in passenger seat.I have in my car a notepad and small camera so that I can at least get a location or an address.Failing that,I will try and remember roadside markers so I can find the location again
What kinda things help you remember a location?

Once upon a time when I had my snazzy smartphone (that I gave up because I could no longer afford the bill), I had an app called TapTag. If you have the app running, all you have to do is shake your phone and it will geotag your location. You can then add info about it and a photo. Later on, when you're not busy driving to work/grocery store/whatever, you can GPS your way back to where you tagged. It was pretty neat but I never wound up using it to go back to places. Now I just do it the old-fashioned way, write it down in my little notebook and look it up on Google Maps if I can. She who hesitates, sees bulldozers.

A lot more, I'm always on high alert for locations. Doesn't take shit.

Definitely. I always try to keep track of where I am. If I spot a potentially interesting location, I'll try to remember and return later. Google Maps is your friend here

More often than not, I either stop to look or I go. "Hey look at that! " to my passenger. But I dont tend to go back unless its close by. I nearly crash my car everywhere I go because I stare so much at the buildings. I find more than half my explores from this.
Typically I note the town, read the next street sign, and check it out on the google satellite view. I also repeatedly scan places on common drives to work or the store, in NH you can never be sure what's abandoned and what's not because of the hicks...so it takes alot of watching.
Good friends bail you out of jail....true friends will be with you saying, "Damn, that was fun!

Posted by Weirdling I also try to take new routes to and from work or stores when I can.
That is some funny shit since I am always doing that. People (at work) have finally stopped asking me the same old questions....."Why did you come in that way?", "Why did I see you coming to work on **** Street when you live on *****?", "Why do you go home that way?"
I also try to take the road least traveled wherever I go....and when I am with my buddy (who I explore the most with) we are like a couple little old ladies, on a Sunday drive, always looking of new places.

Scanning has worked for me on many occasions. Recently I had been eyeballing a spot for months, having previously scouted it with no chance of entry, I waited and watched. Sure enough, hole in chainlink fence and door miraculously busted in a few months later... If you haven't almost got in at least two car accident because you were rubbernecking a building you are doing it wrong.

No shit. I'm amazed I haven't had a heart attack yet from how many times I've swerved wildly back into my own lane as I realize, oh fuck, I just gawked my way right into oncoming traffic. She who hesitates, sees bulldozers.

Ah, yes! The Road Less Traveled it is not just a poetic metaphor, it is a good tactic for finding interesting places.
I'm not scanning any more, because I've always been interested in finding places to see and explore. I too have had my scanning distract my attention while driving.
