Are any of you actually a doctor or EMT?

Because, if your not, I really don't think you should be giving medical advise, IMHO.

As stated before medicine is not a pure science, it's an art.
You better know enough to take charge of your own treatment if you can, otherwise you may learn what the above statement means.
This isn't about covering your licensed MD ass, it's getting out alive and as intact as possible with minimum gear.

Few will be going out with 4+ man elements to carry a full med pack or even any at all.

You should follow your own advice, polly. You be a lot happier.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

No I am not, I have some training for mass casualty disasters, heavy trauma blast injuries, of course CPR and First Aid for the professional rescuer and some other things that are used in disaster services.

As I volunteer in disaster services, I carry things in my vehicle I need for this purpose.

As always advice given on the internet should be used with precautions.

I believe, that you should carry things, so you can help others, as you hope they do the same.

And That's it for me.

I like spetsnazbear's synopsis the best. Although, clearly your intentions are good, I don't think you guys are giving the most practical advice for people that probably haven't even had a basic first aid course. Which, by the way, is a good investment for explorers. We go out and spend hundreds on lenses and fancy backpacks and flashlights...why not spend a hundred bucks and take a basic first aid class through your local red cross? Luckily my employer pays for mine every year but if I had a job that didn't offer that training, I'd probably do it on my own. It's good stuff to know for exploring or just life in general and going once a year keeps the info fresh in your mind and gives you the most up to date information out there. You never know when that shit will come in handy. I've had to use first aid stuff I learned from the trainings more than once.

This isn't even this expensive.
At least not the basic stuff.

If you want to be a little more trained, go for wilderness first aid.

Yeah i kinda agree, this started out as good first aid, and now it seems like two doctors feuding over what to teach.

Yea, mrshitvialls has that effect on threads. Not sure what he's got to prove to the world or why he chooses UER as his medium, but hey it's the way it is. Happy exploring!

Cool, you clearly do have experience in this topic and I thank you for posting about what you know from real life experiences and not what you read off the internet and pretended to be an expert on, like some other people around here.

I don't believe anybody can be an expert in these kind of things.
No matter how often you did things like this.

No matter what, every situation is different.

I believe good training gives you one advantage, and yes is from personal experience as well.

If you are trained often enough you will react the right way when something happens.

That's why I get my CPR and First Aid every year, even that the certificate works for three years. How much do you think you will know after three years?

Also, when you check your First Aid Kit and see some things are getting old, exchange them, don't trash them, use them for some exercise on someone. First try to do it the right way. When you are sure you know what you are doing, try it the fast way and see if its right.

Please check your First Aid Kit at least ones per year.

What to have in a First Aid Kit.
Now we already talked about different first aid kits and I wanted to give you a list, I believe should be in a first aid kit.
As UE is a little different from hiking, I will have different items in it, which you won’t find in your average first aid kit. I will list all the items, and explain them a little further down.

1. Israeli bandage
2. QuikClot
3. Tourniquet
4. CPR mask
5. Gloves
6. Medical tape
7. Adhesive bandage
8. Triangular bandage
9. Elastic bandage
10. Pulse Oximeter
11. Sam Splint

1. Israeli bandage is a bandage that is used to stop bleeding from trauma injuries. As they were made for the armed forces, they have some version that are made for one hand use. This might be useful when you go alone.
2. QuikClot is a hemostatic agent, which is used to stop severe bleeding. It’s also was first used with the armed forces. It’s able to stop bleeding from shooting wounds quite easily.
3. You don’t think about it, until you need it, and then it will be too late.
4. CPR mask, if you think you will give someone CPR and blow air in his lungs after the victim emptied his stomach in front of you, I say you are liar. Besides this you can get them kind of small, so there can’t be a reason not to have one with you all the time.
5. Do I really need to tell you why you need gloves? Make sure you exchange them at least ones per year.
6. Don’t use duct tape if you have other better choices.
7. Why bleeding all over the ground when you can carry a few of those.
8. These are useful to help with fractures and objects that are in your body and that shouldn’t yet come out.
9. Can be used for fractures and so on
10. It will tell you the pulse rate of the person. There is nothing smaller that can tell you the pulse rate, that’s why I have one.
11. A Sam splint is use with fractures as well.

Now some of these items should be used with proper training only. Some can be used without proper training, but it isn’t so expensive to get first aid and cpr training, so try to do it as soon as possible.

To much little bandaides for me, but a reasonable alternative. The kit I showed comes in a red nylon version which was about the same price as yours.

SuchundFind - I don't dislike your choices, but frankly the Pulse Ox is kinda overkill for most here, and splints frankly can be made out so much materials I don't carry them. Also I like the CPR mask, but I don't carry one personally, but here in Kuwait the only people getting mouth to mouth by me will probably be a coworker or close friend. Again I think that item is only good for people who have had CPR class(which everyone should take but probably wont).

Also the israeli bandages are fine, but there are several other choices/brands/designs that work for those building there own.

Mark,
I actually don't have the sam splint in my small kit, but it's to give people an idea. I have it in my larger kits, but they are mostly for volunteering. I carry them in my car, so I can use them whenever.

For the CPR mask, I have some of these:
http://www.amazon....hain/dp/B000T438EW

or even smaller:
http://www.amazon....U/ref=pd_sim_hpc_5

I have a couple of these in all kind of spaces, they are the same size as a little sweeter package.
I of course have a full sized mask as well, in my full sized trauma kit, that is in my car, and in my glove box, as it's faster to reach when driving.

I hope that this kind of idea giving can animate people to build there own first aid kit that is made for there personal needs. What you can buy has a lot of things you don't need in an emergency and is a lot of dead weight.

Really before you work on a stranger you need to ask yourself is it worth it? If they have Hep C you stand a good chance of contracting it, HIV a moderate chance if there is much blood being thrown around.
EVERYONE should have their Hep B vaccines as this is also very contagious.

I'm not getting a stranger's blood all over me. Tough. Live and let die.

Another question is the real thing isn't like a first aid class. Blood is slippery as hell, that smell of iron, and some will lose it especially if it's their own blood squirting out.
You need to keep your emotions in check.
I can tell you that seeing blood squirt out of your neck puts you into shock fast, if you pass out you will probably bleed to death if it's just you.
Just do what you need to do, and stay ice cold chilly about it.

Well we don't really have to worry about the contractors to much we have the same medical requirements the military does, and get checked regularly due to Kuwait foreign worker issues.

Other people get very nervous around blood, the only thing that makes me ill is smelling burnt flesh, and only if I have to stare at a corps of burnt flesh, living people tend to not effect me because I am to focused on dealing with the issue.

Gloves are a must though, even working on yourself it keeps the bugs out.

And strangers have to think the same when they see you in any kind of accident.

Maybe you should have a sign on your forehead:

Stranger, please don't save my life, as I wouldn't save yours.

And as you know they have this new invention, at least it's new for you. It's called a CPR mask, and gloves. If you don't know how these things work, go and take a CPR and First Aid class. Or as I said, clue a sign on your forehead so nobody will waste his time on you when you need help.

Give it a break fool. You get Hep C you are fucked.
Treatment is a real rough ride as some here know.
Many paramedics have contracted it wearing full protection.
Squirting blood goes everywhere, including in your eyes and mouth.
Gloves rip and there's a lot more potentially exposed areas on many casually dressed folks in their flip flops. blah, blah, blah

Telling people to work on anyone without pointing out the option of not is bullshit. Many police departments will not do CPR or anything for that matter because of this very reason.

Case by case basis for me. I have no problem with death.

Since this thread started, you were extremely negative to every posting.

You showed more than ones that you will not help others but you want that they help you.

So as I said:

BS. You turned this into a personal attack and posted a one sided view with less than adequate information. I gave a reasonable consideration for anyone who is going to work on a stranger in a less than perfect setting without all PPE they need. There are times when it won't help the victim and worse isn't in your best interest to do.

There are more blood born pathogens as well that I did not mention, and some of those are deadly as well. Add TB to the list of infections that are highly contagious from just being in the same space of the infected person let alone giving them CPR.

Everyone wants to go home at night in one piece, and not die the next year for something they did that day. Got it?

SuchundFind.
MrSivalls.

This thread has degraded even further. The first two pages, even though they had a little banter were still useful. This third page is nothing but bashing. Im amazed the mods havent locked it because its gone from on topic helpful posts to attacks from each of you.

As one of you said medicine is an art, there are not always right answers. Granted there are wrong answers, but most of what you two have said is right. This includes what to bring, how to treat (some)wounds, and CPR.If you feel comfortable taking the risks involved in mouth to mouth CPR then go for it, otherwise use a mask. Hell you dont even need to do mouth-to mouth now according to American Heart Association.

TL;DR Stop making this thread about attacks, you are both right. Back to things that may save an explorer's life.
