With gas at $1.40 it's no longer feasible to drive randomly all over the place.

Is this price for the liter or for the gallon?

A gallon gasoline in West Texas cost about $3.50

I am running into the same problem. Where I live, there isn't many places to explore. Not very many abandoned places and in Florida the storm drains aren't very impressive. Of course, I haven't been doing this very long, but I am always running around looking for something. I did find an abandoned nursery, with a large warehouse of some sort. I plan to explore there soon. We also found an abandoned bomb shelter made in the 50's, that only a handful of people know about. We're planning a trip down there as well.

Yeah, $8.5/gallon together with ever-increasing taxes and living costs makes looking for new locations and even reaching the ones for which you have driving instructions rather difficult. Of course this is not the most expensive hobby out there - there's no entrance fee to the locations and you don't need expensive gear - but you tend to get stuck somewhere since going around is so expensive. You should choose where to get stuck before you can no longer afford to move away...

I got to taste the American dream a bit in Svalbard, where gasoline cost only $5/gallon or so. However, I knew exactly where to go, so it wasn't like exploring new frontiers...

I think I'm up there with spirit walker, with places being far and in between. There used to be a lot of abandoned stuff here long time ago until it was torn down. Gas isn't a problem since I use a bike, but money is a problem, I can tell you that.

Doesn't take shit.

That's a little high, but I drive an SUV, so my gas mileage isn't that great.

And here in the area we don't have so many places.
I still can go to a couple of old trailer houses but they aren't this great.

I don't even own a vehicle, and rely completely on public transit and my own two feet to get around to abandoned locations. I'm still finding more and more, and even by going back to previously visited locations a second or third time yields greater results than any prior trips.

If you're looking to save money, the best bet is to stay away from your vehicle, and research locations online before putting the pedal to the metal. I've found a number of locations by using Government websites filled with Crown-owned properties in poor/critical condition, notices of demolition, e-paper trails, and by using Google Street View, and Bing Maps Bird's Eye View to both survey an area for potential locations and also plan out the best route to said locations.

Once you know where you're headed, it makes things all the more easy and cost-effective.

Yeah, this isn't possible here:

Besides today we have a cold day with only 74 degrees outside.

We have one bus route going to the local mall and one going to Texas Tech.

Which government sites did you use?

Not American sites if that's what you're wondering. Treasury board of Canada has a list of all government-owned properties, including their exact location, condition of each individual building on that property, date of construction, toxicity reports for ground water and soil, and many other details. I had to weed out the ones that were being leased out, yet still not maintained by the government at all. Found about two dozen in poor/critical condition that were abandoned.

Also used local city's website (Google sent me there) to look up reports on city-owned or private-owned properties. Whenever someone wants to demolish a building and turn it into a park/condo, they need to file a bunch of papers, and there has to be a council meeting...that paper trail is typically posted online for public to see.

Also, I wish it were 74 degrees here...I might actually put on some shorts and go get a tan. ;)

My car gets 200 miles to a 15 gallon tank. Luckily my husband has a motorcycle that we try to use for exploring. Only down side is, we hardly ever have a sitter to go on the bike and we can't hide the fact that we are somewhere we shouldn't be... its way too loud. I don't mind taking the car, if we have money. I love getting our kids into UE with us. I hope that once they get older, they can go with us.

It's amazing how you can think you've run out of places to explore when really, there are tons hidden away. If you get to know your local community (which you may already have) people can show you these "secret" places. I just recently met a couple of explorers in my area who know tons of places I had no idea existed.

I also agree with what others have said. If you run out of abandoned buildings, head to the caves and sewers/drains. Also, have you looked beyond the places you've heard about? Following rivers and train tracks can help you stumble on places you've never been. I know it can feel like you've run out of places, but sometimes you've just run out of the common ones.
