So, not much action in the forum I see! Introduction:

Have an active interest in ghost towns and old farm houses and love exploring...obviously how I found this place. I also am an avid salt water aquarium keeper. I tried an HDR shot from my cell phone on my aquarium, not sure how it turned out?

There's a bit of stuff in the Omaha area.

Poke around and see what you find.

Unfortunately, most of the cool stuff seems to located around, or in neighborhoods that I would rather not be! LOL! I'm really into tracking some of the ghost towns around the area. York county seems to have it's share. I also like abandoned farmsteads, great places to metal detect as well, and yes I know the laws/rules regarding that.

Yeah there's lots of cool stuff around Omaha, just bring a few friends with you if you're worried about the neighborhood. I've never had any trouble around there even in smaller groups or alone.

York county does have some good stuff (I lived in Seward county for 5 years and explored almost everything in a 150 mi radius of there) but you should head out west or further south Jefferson and Saline counties have almost as many empty farms as active ones. Also check out Loma in butler county there was a Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes movie filmed there called "To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar"

If you are into old farms and ghost towns head out towards central Nebraska, I can show a ton of almost empty towns, more old farms, barns and houses than you can count.

Welcome to UER WestOhooligan! Unfortunately there aren't a ton o' posts for our area, but Uzi and Radio2600 try their very hardest to keep us entertained (BTW thank you Uzi and Radio2600!). I'd like to go out a couple times this summer and see some sights so let me know if you'd like some company.

If you're ever in the Lincoln area, I could point you toward some great wreckage leftover from the Hallam disaster - having lived there, myself. Lots of great torn-down barns and abandoned farm houses in the area, if country urbex is your thing. Otherwise, Lincoln has got a rather badass drain system....

I grew up in NYC. I guess my yardstick for measuring the severity of rough neighborhoods is a bit different from that of people that grew up elsewhere.

In North Omaha is one of the most absolutely locked-down abandonment I have ever seen in my life. Second floor windows sealed up with cement blocks. Except for one door on the front, all remaining exterior doors are welded.

They closed in 2007, but their website is still up:

IDK - bring dynamite to get in there.

This is what it looked like when it was still open:

The former proprietor:

Anyway...

The obvious abandonment around S 26th and Center has a live-in caretaker.

Go South from there. You could find something kind of tall, dark and abandoned.

I need to get off my butt and get out; this weekend is a bust for me though. I may try something in the next few weeks. I was going to check out some stuff north of Blair.

I've been in a couple amazing buildings in Omaha, I'm from Council Bluffs myself. Would anyone want to trade locations?

Yeah it wasn't too long ago, couple months. Pretty sure someone uses it as a storage space and is regularly there.

Quite a bit, actually, for such a tiny village.

Last I checked (back in January 2012), the cemetery still hasn't been repaired - the story there being, there were three family crypts that hadn't been maintained in decades. No one owned them anymore, but when the tornado hit, the Schwaneger family one was completely leveled; the other two, Gates family and Danca family, are still standing, but both have missing walls. Would make for a good photo session, if you don't mind graves. The city is probably never going to fix them, as the coffins, themselves, are intact.

Not to mention that the North silo in Hallam toppled completely, and wasn't rebuilt - the basement was sealed off, though, never filled (as the city didn't have the budget to do that much for it). You can get in the basement through a service tunnel outside of town that was boarded up... and then un-boarded by yours' truly.

There's also plenty of barn abandonments out there, too, and I'm willing to bet cracked storm shelters. Everyone I knew (my family included) rebuilt theirs' entirely, since the foundations had all shifted and our insurance companies paid for it, anyway.

My favorite spot in Hallam though, would be the old Isaacson house. Isaacson had owned a horse ranch of 25+ Arabians and Paints, most of which died that night. It was a pain in the ass to clean up. He packed up his remaining horses, and left the big (almost entirely undamaged) house abandoned, and word has it he's in Tennessee now. It's a gorgeous place to get into: three stories, long halls, and more rooms than you have fingers and toes.

So yeah... there's trouble to get into in Hallam. ;)
