| | | "communications" manhole < on 6/20/2004 5:31 AM >
| | | I just paid a visit to an area Rich White Person Convention, otherwise known as "that new recently built commercial area with all the new restaurants and a movie thearter and shops and stuff". anyways, in this shopping center of sorts, EVERYTHING was new. new roads, new looking concrete, new buildigns everywhere, everything is pristine. Im paying attention to the manholes around when i notice that every 100 feet or so there are manholes labeled "COMMUNICATIONS" and they are about 2 or 3 times as big as a normal manhole cover. there is no above ground wiring around this area, so i figure its all high speed internet and phone lines, but it may be a big tunnel, based on the consistency of the manholes. anyhoo, being intrigued as i was, i found a secluded manhole, and attempted to hand open it (a skill i am blessed with), however no luck, again because of the sheer mass. ill return with tools. my question to you, mr/mrs UE-er, is WHAT COULD THESE TUNNELS HOLD??? i can only imagine having the fate of a couple blocks of Silver Spring's internet and phone connections at my fingertips. anyways im rambling and its 1:30 am so bye louie [last edit 6/20/2004 5:31 AM by Louie - edited 1 times]

| | | if they're spaced that frequently, the chances of any kind of tunnel are nil. Periodically spaced manholes for cabling of any sort indicates vault rooms and connecting tubes, through which the cables are run. If it had anything to do with a tunnel, there would be virtually no need for manhole covers at all.

| | | Those probably have fiberoptic cabling, and maybe some cat5 or something and junction boxes are a possibility. The more interesting and fun stuff is gonna be in a centralised coms room somewhere. now that's the place that would be quite interesting to get in...all those flashing lights...

Doubtful that's it's CAT5, it's probably fiber/coax and perhaps telecom bundles. Standard network cabling is really only good for 100 metres, and in a complex like that the Telco will most likely be handling data traffic individually from the store's demarc. The extra large cover is really interesting though, I haven't seen those yet... When you say "3 times as big", do you mean that they're like three feet across... Or six?

A lot of phone manholes (not just around here is the vibe I get) are bigger then those used for other utilitys. I have no idea why they are bigger, but my theory is that they assign the fat linemen to the manholes, because they are in no condition to climb a phone pole... Anybody know why?

| | | the biggest manhole covers around here are the electrical manholes. they also have 2 in 1 covers, where there is a smaller manhole cover inside of a larger cover.

| | | Yeah, as said, probably nothing, but always check. Have found plenty of innocent looking ones with inexplicable placement in relation to one another that do lead to tunnels. ("Why the hell did they put this small one here within 50 feet of two larger ones, all leading to the same tunnel?") Particularly in the older systems, this isn't uncommon. I have also come across tunnel manholes with no clear purpose, but surmise they replaced exhaust fans that could no longer be used, since they would expell asbestos dust which wasn't a known problem when they were installed.
Yet another unoriginal generic UE website. GODDAM! |
