If you're looking to improve, I'd suggest the first thing is watch your lines...for me, one of the really basic things that separates 'snapshots' from 'photography' is nice clean and straight lines in the image. From there you can work on composition, lighting, and so on and so forth. Then concern yourself with editing. Maybe it's cause I grew up and learned photography from the analog days and still practice it, but IMO if you aren't doing 'digital art' then the editing shouldn't make or break a photo.
But maybe you don't want my opinion or suggestions
