|  | | | I have really taken to filming my explores, sadly I just have my phone. So I am wanting to buy a camera that can film in HD, and not expensive. I dont care if is a great camera for taking pictures, as my main focus is just filming. So does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you for your time and help.

| | | | My suggestion is: You will not get good quality video (Worth seeing in HD) with less than 100 lux (Bright living room, 100 lumen per square meter) without spending about $500. You can spend $100 on a high-output light, $100 on a camera, and get good results...but then you're shining 1000 lumen around to place to see nearby objects.
Check out video others make, ask them about their rigs. The DSLR/Prime lens route works okay, but you wind up with tons of money sunk. One of the Raleigh locals had:
Viewscreen periscope
Directional mic
Large, large camera-mounted lights (Which I supplemented since they were inadequate inside abandoned buildings)
Very nice lenses
Big sturdy tripod
A big aluminum frame to hold the components on the camera
I don't know what it cost, but probably his first three children and several thousand dollars. Gets good video with 2000 lumen light though.

But like I said, you can easily get a full HD camera for a few hundred at this point. If you are shooting outdoors or if the building is well lit, you will be fine. But once you try and shoot some darker images, it becomes grainy looking.
I guess it all really depends what you want the outcome to be? You looking for something over what a basic consumer would get? Check out Google by looking up "prosumer" cameras and see what pops up.

| | | | Pretty much what everyone else has said. In my experience the cheapest product you can get that has acceptable low light results / bit rate quality / price is the Eos 550D / Rebel T2i.
You can pick one up on eBay for about $300-$400, cheaper if you find one used, but a fast lens will set you back another $300 at least, something like a Sigma 30mm F1.4 would be a good purchase, especially for low light situations to keep the ISO low. That combined with Magic Lantern will give you a pretty good bang for your buck.
You could go for a designated camcorder for the same price. But they tend to suffer a lot in low light due to the small sensors and usually the bit rate / record media is a tad slow at on average around 24mbits. Although the all in one lens package is a plus for some. The last time I checked camcorders it was 2010, so im sure things have changed.

| | | | Yup, my buddy has a very similar camera to that one... like I said earlier. It's very good (full HD) with good lighting. You will notice graininess when it comes to low lighting, and if you are trying to get more of a professional type video, get some sort of external mics if you can swing it. It'll make a world of a difference! But we've made plenty of films using that thing and I've been pretty impressed overall for the price range.

| | | | When I was looking for a video camera specifically to document low-light situations back in 2009-10, I was recommended the Sony HDR-CX520V by several people on camera forums. I ended up going with it, and let me tell you - this thing is awesome! It is very compact so you can carry it in your pocket, has a built in hard drive and shoots full HD (1080p). It is also VERY good in low light and for pitch dark it has built-in night vision. Do a search on YouTube for the model # and you will find plenty of sample shots. Although not very low light, all of the footage shot in my video ( http://www.youtube...atch?v=oTDYxAqu7ts ) was shot with this camera. I originally purchased it for $1000, but it looks like you can get a used one for just under $500. For extremely low light situations (pitch dark), I mount it on a Opteka X-Grip Stabilizing Handle and attach a 160 LED Video Light. The combination of the cameras low-light abilities and the LED video light produces excellent quality video in the darkest of places. Perhaps the newer generation of this camera is even better, albeit with a higher price tag - but I can't recommend this one enough. Good luck and happy exploring!

| | | | A lot of DSLRs will do HD video now, and they can be pretty inexpensive (look at the Canon Rebel lineup). Another idea is the GoPro line of cameras which are wearable and can be used for really awesome POV-type stuff. Low-light performance maybe won't be great, though.
I shot with the Canon 7D for a couple of years and with a fast lens (f/2 and below), the low-light light pickup is pretty good. Mind you that's about $1,200 but you get an awesome stills camera with it too!

| | | | Just as aperture said, look for a good DSLR, it will shoot video if it is a rebel past t1i, I would probably recommend a t2i or t3i, I own the 60D, which I picked up with a stock lens for $800 off of B and H cameras. They are going to be a really good source to buy.
One MAJOR advantage to using a DSLR are the exchangeable lenses, even if you don't think you will be shooting photos, you will I guarantee it. Plus, I really recommend learning manual (if you haven't) settings for video, you will only be able to access these settings via the higher end Canon models, such as the t1i-t4i, but not the non "i" cameras, such as the the t3. The thing for video quality is the ability to change your settings rather than needing to adjust your environment, basically you need a camera where you can have an super wide aperture ~1.4 or 1.8 which normally you can find for about $130 for the 1.8 and 1.4 for $300, these are both prime 50mm's, which are approximately the same zoom as your eyes, so it will not be too fisheye-y and not too zoomed.

yeah! I figured this was a good intro. I haven't filmed anything in years, I used to make little movies all the time. So this will get me back into it and I can work my way up to prosumer, and if I hit the lottery, I would love to get a RED camera.
