Buying an XL-1

I'm buying an XL-1 from a local guy and was curious what I should look for when inspecting it? I only have a few hours before we are meeting.

Just curious if there are any specific problems they are known for?

Thanks =)

I'm actually looking into some new cameras and this one kept popping up on top prosumer/professional camera lists. It seems highly praised according to online reviews.

I'm suggest jumping over and reading the crap out of amazon reviews... but I'm pretty sure this model is pretty highly rated.

But again, I don't know first hand what issues it might have. Check some reviews quick, but also if the price is good I'd say go for it man! And let me know how it is.

It seems pretty solid, of course it's not HD (But when you get into prosumer Hd camcorders you're looking at 3,000 or more) so I'm fine with that. You can still render in 16:9 quality and it looks nice.

From what I've seen the main problems these had were the firewire ports, which can go bad if you unplug them while the camera is on.

Otherwise they can possibly have the normal tape style problems (Bad heads and so on) but generally they are well built and last.

I'll let you know how it turns out, I'm pretty excited.

Man, I love old prosumer miniDV. The XL-1 is an awesome camcorder.

As with many older tape camcorders, the heads are the most likely thing to be malfunctioning if anything. Next is the tape transport.

Bring a good tape for playback, check for glitches. Better yet, bring a capture cam and a fresh tape to check for recording glitches. Sometimes the heads will be broken so that recorded footage will only playback correctly on the recording camcorder (as with my VX1000.) You'll want to check for that.

If you don't drop it, use cleaning cassettes and seldom playback, it should be good to you.

Best of luck!

Also, do you mind me asking how much you're buying for?

Thanks for the info =) Sadly I don't have anything else that I could use to view the tapes. All I have is an old VHS-C camcorder. Don't have any tapes either, I told him to bring some so I can test it out though. He has the original box and he's including some extras.

He told me he's put about 300 hours on it since 2005 and that he bought it then with a 9+ rating from B&H photo.

All these old camcorders freak me out, I hate dealing with heads and what not.

I'm actually trading one of my nikon lenses for it, paid 450 for the lens so that's what I'm basically paying for the XL1.

Thanks for the info again! =)

I would recommend looking for something else. I shot with a canon gl2, and then a sony pd150 for a few years. I loved those cameras, but they are quite outdated. they can still be capable of great quality.. but I got sick of buying tapes and cleaning tape heads.

I'm with you on that, tapes are a headache but there's something about it that I like. They also make this...

That uses the firewire to capture to a HDD.

Just got it, checked it out. The recording, playback seems to be good. Came with a very high quality Petrol camera bag, a beachhead mic adapter, and a rain cover.

Should I buy another Mini-DV camcorder to use for playback and capture for the computer? So I wont wear the heads out on this?

Absolutely. Even when the camcorders were new people were doing this. A simple, used miniDV shouldn't be all that expensive nowadays. Make sure it has working Firewire.

If you've got the extra cash you could try to find a little VTR instead. I've got this one: http://www.amazon....kman/dp/B00006JQQ5

Of course, playing back/capturing a few times isn't going to kill your XL-1.

The camera looks good! Great deal with the Beachtek included. It's good to see people are shooting tape - there's nothing quite like viewing SD footage on a CRT via analog inputs.

Personally, I love the low dynamic range of my VX1000.

Good luck!

Sweet! You know, the guy said he had a sony VTR he would sell me for 300 but I'm down to my last 100 at the moment. I told him to hold it for me so I may grab it up. I need sony vegas 8 or something though which is going to run me 105. Gah lol.

Thanks for the good info, I may end up having to go the cheap Mini DV camera rout.

I love good SD also, with so much "Perfection" these days, it's nice to not really worry.

Also, what are the pluses to having a VTR over another cheap camera to cap the footage to the computer?

Depends on the capture cam you're comparing it to. You get a bigger LCD, better speakers, analog outputs for viewing on a TV (not all cheap camcorders will have that), and possibly faster FF/REW.

In the TV studio I work at they use professional Sony VTRs for MiniDV and DVCAM. They scrub the hell out of the tapes every day on those VTRs and I have never seen a glitch. Not to mention the tapes are being reused multiple times. I don't think the VTRs are even being serviced. They just keep going.

Now I'm not saying that a portable VTR (such as the one I mentioned) would perform to those standards, but one would assume that the heads in any dedicated VTR would be superior to that of a camcorder. It's a matter of reliability really. Both will do what you want just fine, but the VTR may last longer.

I've never had any trouble with my VTR (a Sony GV-D900)

Traded for it but the item I traded was bought for 450 so that's what I paid. There's probably 700$ worth of gear here.

Ended up getting a sony VTR DSR-11 today so I wouldn't have to run the tape head on my camera too much.

For sure, that was one of my main reasons of getting it. I also thought doing a quality standard def youtube channel about exploring would be something slightly different lol. Everyone seems to be going nuts over HD quality footage these days. Guess I may sound a bit hipster(ish).

Now that I got the VTR all I'm really waiting on is getting my CN 160 light and I'll be set. I'll try to get some test footage up ASAP.
