Investigation Tool: County Property Appraiser Websites

It's often pretty hard to find details and information about a location. However, if you use county property appraiser websites, you can zoom around on a map and look at parcels of land and buildings to get tons of details about them. Do a Google search for "[Your county's name here] property appraiser", and you'll likely find a local-government website with a picture of some Suit grinning in front of a silhouette of the county. These sites are often poorly built and have annoying web interfaces, but once you figure out where the goods are (in the "Map" section), they contain a trove of official information. You can find out for sure where the property lines are, who owns the property, the property's ownership history, the zoning code, tax information, and even ground-level photographs. I once found exterior photos of a location taken two days before I planned to explore it. POE was clearly shown. In the case an abandoned trailer park nearby, I determined that the property was owned by some dead German guy, and that nobody would care if I walked around there.
This is a really valuable tool to use for scouting out a location beforehand, or for coming home to your little Urbex lair and researching just what the hell that building used to be (and thus disappointing yourself when you discover that it wasn't an abandoned mental hospital, but rather a dentist's office). Enjoy.

Excellent information indeed. Thanks for sharing. I am hoping it will open up a lot of new possibilities for places around my end of town where locations are so sparse.

Yeah, it definitely gives you some insight into the details of certain locations. And it lets you snoop on your dirtbag neighbors.

This has been how i do most of my research locally for years. Wingis.org FTW!

I search by [locality/GIS assessments ] the same way. Instead of "property appraiser", I search : location, GIS.
I like being able to get as much or as little as I want, then print it and take it with me. Been very helpful with cemeteries and old homesteads as well as business, industry and service properties. Local govt owned, unused parcels/structures , etc.
Depending on the individual appraisers, some will put in odd notes and helpful info in the "other notes" section as well. So be sure to look all the the way at the the bottom of the data pages.

Good find.

I stumbled upon this site:

http://www.waymark...directory.aspx?f=1

People mark locations and list them. As you can see from this list you have everything from abandonments, caves and towers, to poppers fields and old bridges.

Great if you like to photograph other things along with buildings.
