| | | I was tipped off about a small town in Southern Ontario where residents are abandoning their homes or putting them for sale. According to a news article there were 10 to 12 abandoned homes in the area left behind by residents concerned about the health effects of nearby wind turbine generators. With high hopes, a full tank of gas, exploring partner in the passenger seat and my camera, we headed out for the day. Upon our arrival we found a few modern vacant homes, tightly sealed up. There were approximately one dozen occupied homes within sight of the turbines that were marked as For Sale. Local residents are claiming to be experiencing health issues and are complaining about the constant 'whomp' sound of the enormous blades as they move through the air. I didn't realize how enormous these turbines were until standing directly underneath one. The blades are high enough from the ground that one might not realize a single blade is about the length of approximately 25 people standing with their arms extended outwards. There was only one house that was accessable, clearly not part of the modern exodus from these massive sky giants. 1.

| | | Pretty sure I know where this one is, a bit off the beaten path. The windmills are a big issue in that part of the province. The wife's parents live smack-dab in the middle there, in fact, they were approached about having one on their property. They declined. We too didn't realize just how big those turbines are until we saw them going in. When the blades were on the ground waiting to be mounted, we thought it was a passenger jet in one of the fields! And yes, you can hear a steady sound coming from them, but only when you are either directly underneath it or it's dead quiet outside. I didn't notice the sound till I went outside late at night and made a conscious effort to hear them. As for the health effects - I don't know what to say. My father in law said that their dogs went nuts for the day when they turned on the turbines for the first time but they're fine now. Thanks for posting - if you look hard there's plenty more barns and homes like the one you photographed all along the roads

| | | Seems like the only adverse health effects of wind turbine generators are noise-related stress and resultant psychosomatic symptoms: http://www.cfp.ca/content/59/5/473 Personally, the only ones I've been close enough to to hear are the defunct Mitsubishi generators along the road to South Point, HI. I found them fascinating, and don't recall any disturbing noise from the moving ones.
