You put your loved ones in a place where you think they’ll be remembered, at least while you’re around anyway. Looked like some locals took maters in their own hands, though, and have maintained at least portions of this huge estate.

I'm really surprised you didn't blow an entire memory card here, bro. This place is literally over a square mile in size. Including burials that occurred in the last ten years and the half-dozen military portions, only about 25-30% of this cemetery is taken care of. The rest looks like a Vietnamese jungle. Bring your tick spray.

:-/ Took me about, felt like, 30m to get here from my hotel – and most of that was going down the main drag stuck behind a trolley. I didn’t even get across the creek!!

…I’ll be out again next year for another business trip ;)

Yeah man, it's the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Southwest Philadelphia in the neighborhood of Kingsessing. The largest cemetery in Pennsylvania. Here's a few links to it's history and current state and a BING map to pinpoint it in case you wanna come down and check it out. It's an all-dayer full of hills and much walking. It lies in two counties as well and is split by a road and a decent-sized creek. Some of it is landscaped but most of it isn't and you'll see everything in there from headless pit-bull skeletons, piles of crack vials, used condoms and empty beer containers. It's easier to traverse in the winter when all the growth dies down but it's more photogenic now. You can park anywhere and just walk right in. I have a shit-ton of family buried there (on my father's side) but I have yet been able to locate them, as there are at least a half a million burials.
It's an amazing place, full of statues, huge monuments, dead from every American war, entire sections devoted to Freemasons, unknown soldiers and huge mausoleums in all of it's abandoned apocalyptic splendor. It's also only a few minutes drive from Tony Luke's where you can get beer and the best cheese-steaks in the city.

One last thing... There are a multitude of self-possessed morons who are collecting money for tours of the cemetery. For $25 you get to ride in a rented commuter van and can tour the property and take photographs.
It's fucking free. It's an actively visited cemetery.
Although it's pretty unkempt with no valid owner, people come every day to pay their respects to loved ones and keep their gravesites clean. Nobody should profit from any visitations. Like I said, my great-grandparents and multitudes of aunts and uncles are buried there so no grubby strangers should benefit monetarily by the poor condition of a public cemetery.
Don't get taken in.

Yeah I thought it was this place... I saw brochures for it last time I was at the Franklin institute... Didn't realize it was in this state of neglect.

Yeah, it's pretty shot to shit. Great opportunity for someone well-versed in outdoor photography though that doesn't mind hiking until their calves burn off.

Just the thought of that is mind blowing... Do people actually pay money to drive around a cemetery in a van? Why anyone would think that's a good idea is beyond me.

The people on the tour don't even get to do that. They drive to a central location somewhere in the city and find shitty parking, clamber into the van, then the van goes to the cemetery and parks on the street and you can go walk around for a few hours and take pictures. From where the van parks to the opposite corner of the cemetery is an easy mile, then back again, not including the rest of it, which is all hills and lots of them. It's a Hell of a cemetery, it really is. Check out the BING and zoom in and move your cursor all around. You'll be busy for an hour just fucking around with that.

First time I went there we saw a live pit bull chained to a tree in the middle of dense overgrowth.
